Hi all,

I've just bought a new guitar!

Unfortunately no where near as nice as Miroslav's new baby - man I'd be worried about scratching that thing!

.. but I've been here firing questions here about tube amps, guitar quality, iso cabs and mics for approaching six months now. Yes, it's taken me that that long to mic up a tube amp and get a sound that I like - the first attempts were shockin', I can tell you :o

Anyway, the reason for the post - I need feedback on the guitar tone. I've been at it so long, I've lost that ability to hear it fresh, and lets face it, here is the right crowd to get feedback from.

Remember, the content may not be for everyone (I know there are old rockers to metal-heads here), it's my new *sound* I want feedback for.

... actually, I don't think I've ever had a 'sound'...

For those interested int the details,

Fender Blues Jr (stock, Master 10, Vol 7)
Sure SM57, off-axis

Cheers.

I love the tone

So what's the guitar? Stock pickups? What were the pickup settings?

Any pedals, or just the amp?

Are you sure the Jr is stock tubes? I've got a Jr and I can't get it to sound anything like that. And if I had the gain cranked that high, it would have way more distortion.

Congrats on finding the sound.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the axe!

It's an Indie IPR1.

Shelving guitar qualities like Aesthetic value and brand name to save cost, I played *lots* of guitars in stores and went with the best one, rated on feel, sustain and tone.

I eneded up going to the equivalent of the "guitar warehouse" where they had ( i kid you not ) hundreds of guitars on the wall. Even in the one brand and model, quality varied greatly, so it was a case of whittling down the options, and "Mr sustain" won.

I could have easily ended up with a PRS-SE, an Epiphone or any of the vast number of off-shore made axes going cheap, it just happened to be this one - it's got sooo much sustain, it's probably still ringing from when I put it down last night. This is new for me.

Stock pickups, don't know much about them (or pickups in general for that matter). They sound, "OK". I'm coming from serious Dimarzio pups in my '88 Ibanez Jem, so these new pups are a different beast to me. Pickup settings? I wrote down the gap distance between pickup and strings, but I can't remember :(

Yes, one Boss EQ pedal, but only to buffer the long cable run to the amp, which was in the next room (friggin' loud).

Stock Blues Jr. I bought it 6 months ago. Yeah, you have to turn them up to get a good sound.

You reckon you'd have lots of distortion at that level? You're pickups must be hot.

Nice guitar

Looks good, sounds good, and I assume you like the way it plays.

By pickup settings, I meant relative tone & vol, but never mind, it's pointless.

I got my Master & Volume mixed up, but I still would have more distortion than that, on all my guitars.

I've never had the master anywhere near 10. And I normally run it about 2, volume about halfway, give or take.

Maybe I just need to find a place to turn it up to 10.

Seriously! I'd love to hear some of those sounds coming out of my Blues Jr. I've got homework to do...

I've spent a bit of time with this.

There's a point where you turn the master up and it starts to do the "sweet valve souding thing" - a new experience for me. This has never been with the master below about 5.

There's also, a point where the distortion get too "gritty", "buzzy", "saturated in a bad way". This is with the Master up there at 11 or 12. I assume that this sound is associated with distortion from the power stage of the amp, or too much distortion from the power stage.

Of couse, all of this will be relative to where you've got the "volume" set, and further to this, how hot your pickups are and all the other gain related variables.

But, I've never been able to get a good sound running the BJr at a low volume :( To me, It just sounds like a cheap practice amp at low volume, thus my "OMG what have a bought" moment 6 months ago!

:D

Yeah...it's like anything new/nice...until that first scratch, then you stop worrying about it and just play. ;)

Hey...that Indie is a sweet looking guitar...I never heard of Indie guitars before. What kind of price range do they fall in?
I see they are distributed out of Canada...but where are they made (their website doesn't mention it)?
Are they made in Asia?

I know what you mean about ignoring brand name and aesthetic value. I went with that approach for awhile. I use to have a few Agile (Rondo Music) guitars which were a great value for the cost.
Likewise, my reissue Hagstrom guitars are kinda in that same vein....but now I'm slowly adding some guitars that also cover the brand/aesthetic turf.
They cost a few more bucks, but I don't think I will lose anything on them.
I already did that with my amp line...and sold off all my middlin' amps and stepped up a few notches.
I couldn't afford to do it a few years back...but now while I can I figure, why not indulge a bit? :)

Hey, that's some nice playing.
I was planning to try doing some video clips myself over the holiday weekend coming up…but I also have some house painting to do… :(

Cheap! I mean AUD$900 (US$740).

Sweet looking? If you look at it up close it does have a nice polished finish, but really you can see all it's assembly line shortcuts, and I don't want to know how many separate pieces of wood go to make up the body.

I had *never* heard of Indie guitars before either. They're quite new and it felt odd buying something that no one had heard of. .. but I stuck to the theory of "best axe for function".

On the day I purchased, I also had in the sights a Maton Electric $2700. These were *the* two possible guitars for me in the store. I just couldn't see what my extra $1800 was going to get me, other than a nicer looking guitar (and less sustain). The Maton probably had nicer pickups/tone, but what do I know about tone? Nothin.

Without exaggeration, having played guitars in all the shops around my city, no guitar had as much sustain as (this particular) Indie! You can stick it on your lap and play it like a piano.

Screw the painting - record!

Cheers,
FM
