I'm sort of a novice recording engineer, but have recorded quite a bit in a friends studio over the past 3 to 4 years. So, I decided to go out and get some of my own equipment and see what happens. I have always been interested in recording but never had the money to afford the equipment until I got a new job. Anyways, here is what I have:
-Alesis Multimix16FXD
-Alesis Monitor One's riding on Auralex Mopads
-Alesis RA-100 power amp
-MXL 2001 condensor mic
-MXL 603 instrument mic
-Adobe Audition
-Dell 8300, Pentium 4, 3.2GHz, 512MB RAM, 32GB of available HD space left
I'm still in the market for a good interface box/card. I'm leaning towards a PCI or PCI-E interface card, but haven't decided on what is good and what I need. I'm planning on recording the whole "shabang" including, a huge drumset, acoustic guitars (acoustically and electrically), guitar amps, bass amps (and bass DI), vocals, keyboards, horns, harmonica, and whatever else I can find that I can make music with. I know I need to get some more mics. My next purchase will probably be a couple SM57's and maybe a drum mic kit. I was looking into the Samson 8kit here . If someone could give me some guidance in hooking some of this stuff up to get an awesome sound and help me find an interface preferrabley multitrack(8 or so in's, 2 or 4 out's). I need to invest in some mic pre's too for the condensor at least, so some suggestions on a mic pre would be helpful. I'm wanting to have a fully loaded studio, with some good equipment. Most of the effects and whatnot will be in Audition, unless i find out other rack gear that is inexpensive and of average quality. I know what i have now is definately not top of the line, but it should work for the time being, until i can upgrade. Also, i'm in a basement, with a wall of concrete, a wall with unfinished drywall, a wall with 2x4 studs, and an open wall that i need to close up. Building a temp wall with 2x4's is out of the question. So, i need something to hang or something to tack there for the time being. What should i put on the walls to get better acoustics. I know this area and layout is about the worst you can get when speaking of acoustics, but as i said before, i want to do with what i have at the moment. I'd imagine with some thought and work, i can get it alright. I'm not real interested in spending tons of money on Auralex or some other acoutical foam. Is there any substitutes?? I have a really tight budget with everything and I've already spent close to a grand and do not really want to spend a whole lot more if possible. Any help with a studio setup and recording tips for me, would be very very awesome. THANKS!!
