I bought this to record auditions and rehearsals, but tonight when I was trying it out for the first time I saw that the recorder stopped recording at 7 seconds. I tried everything but it wouldn't let me record for longer than 7 seconds. Do I have a defective unit or am I doing something wrong?

A very obvious, and perhaps silly question: do you have an SD card in the DR40?

My guess would be a defective or incompatible SD card.

Yeah, 'it'appen. Yesterday I spent over an hour with the wife's USB card reader which her very low grade eMachines laptop simply would not see. Downloaded drivers and all sorts but nothing worked. THEN! Had the brilliant idea of trying it in MY HP i3 lappy. That didn't see it either!

They are only 2 quid jobs but I have bought many over the years and sent a couple to son, never had a failure until yesterday.

Also, SD card might need to be formatted?

Dave.

Already did that. I'm going with the defective card, it seems the most likely explanation.

I have the DR40. It has an Auto-Record function that will stop the recording if nothing is heard for 5 seconds. (Or is it 10 seconds). Maybe check that that is off and/or check that your levels are set properly.
