I'm meeting the architecht Thursday, and could change the dimensions if there are serious problems with the ratios.

We like to record and mix in the same room... Treatment ideas?

While this isn't a large room, is it big enough to benefit from diffusion?

How much broadband trapping is too much? I'm currently looking at approximately 32-38 4" panels. Or is quality going to outperform quantity for a room like this?

you could use a 10' ceiling and 1:1.6:2.33 as a ratio and make the room:

1.00 10.00'
1.60 16.00'
2.33 23.30' 3728 cu ft

this would be big enough to use diffusion treatments - however with that many panels spaced around you will get some diffusion effects. trap the corners really well and remember the floor-ceiling needs panels up top.

so 38 2'x4' panels would be about 40% of the room (including the ceiling) so with the corners stacked well, you'll probably have about 35% coverage which should be decently live.

I'm no expert, but I'll share what I've learned in this forum from reading and posting. As long as your floor is reflective (wood or concrete or non-absorbant material) it seems like you would maintain a bit of the "live" sound even with all of that absorbtion (assuming the "panels" will be fiberglass?), and I bet it will be a nice controlled environment if so. I've got a combination of Auralex 2"(in 2' intervals from floor to ceiling and behind the monitor/mix position), foam-by-mail 4"(covering about 60% of the back wall), and MiniTraps bass traps in all four corners. I still want to add a little more fiberglass just to tame a bit more of the reflections (clouds on the ceiling over mix position, maybe a little more in the corners and back wall or a couple of 2x4' panels to each side of mix position), but it is so night-and-day compared to the sound before adding treatment.

I asked about diffusion awhile back and was told that it probably would not make a difference in my tracking/mixing room, which is a little less than half of what yours is and with a peak of 10' at the top pitch of the ceiling, so maybe someone will chime in as to whether yours will significantly benefit from diffusion.

Can't wait to see some photos once construction starts.

Thanks, Seeker. I'll definitely post a picture log.

Where are you going to build this Casey? Seems like it should be pretty cool....

Only odd thing I see, is the 25....normally you go by 4' increments simply because that is a standard size for sheeting. Not a big deal at all, other than maybe a bit more waste.

We will see tonight when I meet the architect to go over the plans.

We're knocking down the shed (sorry true) and are building as big as we can.

I hope you can come break it in with us.

Zed is coming for the existing broadband panels, I'm going with tuned bass traps.

Cool...when you gonna do the break in? :D

Oh, and the size thing, we deal with so many people that freak when they have to spend another $100 on a few sheets of OSB, and more rock....on a $60K remodel....because they do something that is slightly odd sized...

Not a big deal at all...we just hear some funny whines about stuff...:D

Take a look at Blue Bear's rooms. That's one of the best ways to treat a small room. A lot depends on what type of sound you want.
