Here's a new clip of a song I just recorded this afternoon. Tell me what you think!

Not bad, I like it.

How'd you do the drums, are those sequenced? The kick and snare give me the impression that they're sequenced.... the cymbals sound very good though, whatever you used, I'm interested in it.

Guitar sounds a little bit thin... like it's got some phase issues or something. The guitar is really the thing I think you should work on the most... the other stuff sounds pretty good... if the low end could be bigger, it would be nice, but that's not really something you can just "Do" very easily. As it is, the low end is solid and tight. Is the bass sequenced too, or is that a real bass?

So maybe if you can get a little more low end out of the bass and kick, it could help to "enfullenize" things a bit, but that can be tricky to do without making it muddy... Maybe something can be done though, it's pretty controlled sounding as it is, so you have quite a bit of room to work with. You can probably get away with bringing up the levels of the bass a bit, because it doesn't really sound like it's competing too much with the guitar... I think you can get away with pumping it up a tad without muddying things up.

Then try to bring the guitar out more.... bigger, thicker, fuller, and I think there's not really much more that I can think of that would would help on the everlasting quest for improvement ...

Maybe try compressing the drums less and bringing up everything, cuz the way it sounds right now I'd say the guitar needs a little bit more compression to pop out along with the drums, but instead of having everything compressed, it'd be better to have everything uncompressed, you'll probably en d up with more life to it.

All in all, I'd say it's definitely on it's way to where it needs to be. The guitar and the low end will help it be better, but it's not really a problem per se, just the things that would be the first to be improved. As a whole, it's pretty clear and solid, under-control sounding. Playing is nice and tight, so that's fine. Nice job so far.

edit: hmm, actually the low end comes out a bit more when I turn it up a little bit... I was first listening a little lower than I usually do, cuz it's 10pm here and the walls are pretty thin. Bass is probably good, but the guitar still could benefit from being a little bigger sounding... maybe some eq could help, or maybe a little bit of compression to bring out the low end or soemthing.

How was the guitar recorded?

The drums were tracked, I never use samples. I gated the snare and kick so I could exaggerate them a bit. Drums are usually my main focus in my recordings. Guitars are always my biggest challenge; I have a Line 6 amp and it just sounds too "digital". I would give my left arm for a 5150 or something.

Aw.... I was kinda hoping there was some secret sample set that had such realistic sounding cymbals. =) Oh well, I bet drum kit from hell would be pretty good, but I cant justify spending the money on that when I could almost buy a pair of C4's, or buy a D6/Atm25/D112 and have some left over... or be halfway saved for a drumkit of my own.

Drums sound pretty good, the kick just sounded so up front and clear that it seemed like a sample, and the playing was very tight. I'm interested in what you used to record the drums, if you care to share.

great groove..

I like this piece a lot.

I'm hearing some slight clipping, it seems to coincide with the kick (not every beat but every 10 secs or so), so it may be the click of the beater I'm not sure.

Great groove, i think the bass is a little shy, but not much.
Lead guitar lick is sweet, nice separation from the rythym and very catchy.

Other than that and the guitar tips above, you've got a great start to an epic album.

I'm afraid I don't have the secret to realistic sounding cymbals with drum samples, matta :(. My setup is very limited, actually; I can only record four tracks simultaneously. I use two Oktava MK012's for overheads, a Beta 52 on the kick, and an SM57 on the snare. For this particular song, I pulled a Mike Portnoy and tuned my snare really high and didn't mute it with anything. My kick's batter head is always tuned low for clickiness (I also use a wooden beater). As for the clipping thing, I can see what you're talking about. I get a little carried away with making my recordings louder via normilization and hard limited sometimes. The gated snare and kick were so exaggerated that it might actually clip, but lately I don't worry about clipping much; I try and do what sounds good instead of living by the rules. I limited the max amplitude to -.1 or -.2, though. I'm playing all the tracks as well  .

Another bangin' groove Matt,, nice work!

Maybe roll off some 2 k on the Guits though...
It was a little harsh.

I gotta admit, I liked the "obnoxious" tune a little better. Therefore, this song is only 87.3% karate nuclear badass. I was thinking maybe bury that melody line a little deeper in the mix. It sounds like the kind of thing that really needs the underlying chords to power the melody properly, and once it kicked in I couldn't hear much underneath. Good work though...the world could use more musicians like yourself.

Sounds good mixing and music wise. Did you use an amp for the guitar? They sound a bit too grizzly if you know what i mean. And the guitars are too loud in the mix.
But apart from that its pretty good man.
