If there was such a thing, what would it be like? I know a lot of you use many of these sites: Facebook, Myspace, Reverbnation, Soundcloud, Bandcamp... etc.

But I also hear complaints about each one.

So - If you could wave a magic wand and have the perfect site for you to promote your music on and discover new music - whatever - what would it be like? What are the best parts of the existing sites and what are the worst parts?

The best site would have judges that listen to every submission. If one sucks, the IP address is recorded, tracked, and the people submitting the bad music would be killed by robots.

I was thinking sharks with laser beams... but robots could work

A site that filters bad music would be pretty sweet.

It'd also need to have a very large and engaged user-base so that when I upload good music (obviously) lots of people would listen to it.

I like soundclick for the charts...there's some people take it a bit serious which is hilarious..theres even software that will click your song to get it up the charts...if found out your song is tuffed to the bottom lol

i remember when I first started Id only use soundclick so with the couple of hundred clicks youd get it was enough to get in the top ten, i think I made it to #3 once...so there would be all this try hard music, hoping for their major breakthrough...then my badly mixed, wonky vocals, and out of tune guitar, playing 80s crap in the top five amongst the wannabes

did make me smile and impressed the fuck out of one of my mates :D

I've had quite a few go #1 at soundclick back when I used it. Having a #1 at soundclick was proof that nothing on the internet matters whatsoever.

Reverb nation has some kind of charts thing too doesn't it? Regional and national and stuff?

Instead of haunting for new sites or different site for your music promotion its better to create your own website. As good as MySpace and its mates are, having your own website too looks more professional. Websites are cheap to host and easy to build so there are no excuses. Remember to update it as often as your social network profile though.

As far as I can see all of the sites (including making one of your own) are perfectly fine for hosting your music, allowing people to download or purchase, connecting to other social media etc etc etc.

I think the complaints from a lot of people stem from the fact that posting their creations at any of these sites, amazingly, doesn't make them instantly rich and internationally famous and the hard work has only just begun once you have created your genius masterpieces

So I guess to answer the original question, the perfect site would be one that didn't just host your music and provide the artist with tools to promote but actually spent hundreds of hours a month critiquing and offering suggestions for improvement and actively promoting, networking and building exposure for the artist all for free

Perhaps we could build that, maybe call it a "Record Label", oh wait.............
