I'd like to use the MIDI capability of a Yamaha DD series drum set to trigger sounds on my Zoom HD16. Never used MIDI before, I've only recorded direct out from the Yamaha. Is there a place I can go to learn more about how to use MIDI in this capability? The manuals are good, but they assume you already know a certain amount about MIDI.

thanks

Basically all you have to do is hook up the cable. Then you can create a midi track on your pc and play it thru your drum module. Similarly, you can play your drums and record the midi instead of the raw audio on your PC. Then you can make corrections and edits, and re-play the edited midi track thru your module.

As indicated, if you are simply trying to send a MIDI signal from your DD pads - it is simply a matter of MIDI out from your DD to your computer and then a MIDI out from the computer to the Zoom. This allows you to use the DD as a MIDI controller and the Zoom as a sound module.

The computer captures the MIDI performance (what you play on the DD) and then sends that performance data to the Zoom. An audio out from your Zoom to your computer and you now can record the actual audio.

Regarding information on MIDI - there are countless web sites with either articles of which advertise books - Google MIDI and you'll have reading material for days (or search Amazon). Any large bookstore (Barnes & Noble, etc.) should have books on MIDI.
