I think most any program will sound the same if you just record a track and play it back (bits in, bits out). The sonic differences start to appear with how they handle summing, the dithering algorithms they use, and then to a greater extent the EQ, dynamics, and effects algorithms. So the more you manipulate the sound, the more the program quality matters. In your case, being rather minimalistic, it probably doesn't matter too much. There are also quite a few free plugins that are pretty usable. Digital Fishphones has some truely quality free plugins, and a search on the subject will turn up lots of others.
The recording software I use is Samplitude Professional, which is over a grand, but they recently started offering Samplitude SE for only $69, which is a steal. They're practically giving away the farm, but they gambling that once hooked, you'll upgrade to classic or professional at a reduced upgrade price. SE has the same great audio engine and quite a bit of the meat of the full program is included;
- 48 tracks, 2 submix buses, 4 aux buses
- Consistent use of 32-bit floating point processing
- ASIO, MME, and WDM support
- Comprehensive realtime audio editor functions
- Unique object-oriented editing options
- Batch processing, flexible mixer with variable
signal flow
- ReWire, DirectX and VST plugin support
- Automatic latency compensation for Samplitude
effects
- VSTi support incl. 8 separate outputs
- MIDI recording & editing
- Supports up to 8 I/Os (24-bit/96 kHz)
- Mixer automation (vol. pan), 5x undo/redo
- High-quality effects: Normalize, 4-band parametric
EQ, Stereo Enhancer, Amp Simulation, Vocoder,
Dehisser, Timestretching/Pitchshifting, Panorama,
Dynamics (Compressor, Expander, Noise Gate,
Limiter), Reverb, Delay, Resampling, Declipping,
Distortion, Noise Reduction, Phase Invert
I highly recommend you check out the demo, it's a great program. They also have a rent program for the full classic or professional versions, $20 a month (classic), with the rent applying towards purchase. Samp V8 classic is an end to end solution, with redbook CD and DVD authoring.
