hi guys, ive been following this board for a while and i would
like you to help me on this one...

right now im using a spl nugget mic, which is allright, but now im
looking for a better mic....i was thinkin abt following mics:

neumann tlm 103
neumann u 87 ai (ebay)
or
akg 414 tl II

untill i found this test on a swiss site -> echochamber.ch

now im really in love with a mc51 nevaton mic,
it just sounds awsome to me...wow

i never thought a russian mic could sound so great...

check it out at http://www.echochamber.ch

the test:

neumann tlm 103 http://www.memi.de/echochamber/microphones/vox8.wav

akg 414 tl II http://www.memi.de/echochamber/microphones/vox1.wav

nevaton mc51 http://www.memi.de/echochamber/microphones/vox10.wav

its 32bit, so if the links doesnt work, you have to download it and
paste it into your wavelab (or any other programm like this)...

it just sounds awsome to me

+

it costs less than both neumann and akg

so what do you think abt it ?

and which preamp would you recommend if i would buy this mic ?

i liked the neumann best out of your samples, though it's probably more a matter of taste... they all seemed to be "different" rather than "better or worse."
if you like it, then great, get a bunch of em!

to me this "nevaton" has more of that mid-high distortion or emphasis that my ears associate with cheap mics by now (similar to many Rode or a few Studio Projects mics). high-end mics are generally darker, warmer. i'm not sure if that automatically means 'better' or not but my brain is preprogrammed at this point to believe that expensive mics=better therefore darker=better.

What I heard was the MC51 having a nice emphasized high-end, but the mid was hollow, so that empasized high-end was simply annoying rather than nice.

I found the 414 TL/II and TLM-103 some-what close in the mids (though not all that close). And I found the TLM-103 having a smoother and more open and a bit brighter top-end and a tighter bottom, in comparision to the 414 TL/II.

This is what I found with these 3 recordings after 3 listens each.

hi guys ! thanxs for your replies !

to me both nevaton and neumann sound great,
but the mc51 just adds somethin to the voice i really like,
it makes the voice "bigger" and more "alive", its "in your face"
and i like that, especially cuz i have a rather thin voice i
think this mic would give more power to my voice , what do you think ?

(im still kinda shocked, that you think this "somethin" is annoying :o )

i really didnt like the akg 414 tl II, so its all abt nevaton vs.
neumann now...

1.do you think it would be better to buy a used u87 ai instead of
neumann tlm 103 or nevaton mc51 ??? would it sounds much better for voice ???

2. if i am going to buy the nevaton,
which preamp would you recommend me ?

(price range 500 - 2000 dollars)

it's up to you, but what you hear as "bigger," i hear as "harsher" and "thinner," mostly due to the hollow mids that RE mentioned. i think that kind of mic is probably the WORST for very thin voices.

a U87 would likely not only sound smoother than any of these mics, but would also be a better long-term investment... they hold their value very well. if you record others, it's likely to bring business with it as well.

that said, if you like the nevaton, then don't listen to any of us. seriously.
