Mixing and Mastering.
Im looking to get a Neumann and was wondering if anyone had any pointers on which mic to choose to suit a heavy rock band where the singer has a powerfull voice and sings alot of stuff at quite a high pitch.

ps. Cost is not an issue.

Cheers,
Eck

Does it have to be a Nuemann?? I would say a RE20 would do better for your application. But my favorite Nuemann mic that I use every day at the studio is the TLM193. I don't like the U-87 that much.

One of my favorites of the Neumann line that is still in production is the M149 and 150's. I too don't care for the new Neumann U87's that much, and am up and down about the TLM 103. I like the TLM 193 like mentioned above, but I like the 127 even better. One thing I have noticed is that the U87 and the 103 and even the 193 pair up very nicely it seems with the Avalon 737. In my opinion, the combination usually accents each other in such a way that i feel like both mic and pre sound better than they really are.

On the other hand, I have a line on a 35 year old near mint condition Neumann U 47 FET for about $2k if you are interested.

It doesnt need to be a Nuemann, I just heard good things about them and am looking for a real quality crisp clear recording.
You both say yous dont like the U87, what dont yous like about that mic?

Cheers,
Eck

Sir George Martin likes the TLM 103 for what it's worth. As strange as this is, for higher pitched rock vocals, look into Beyerdynamic, I fell in love with a M-300. An M-260 may do your singer some justice, great transparancy. I go through a lot of gear, but a nice Beyer never leaves my stash. Just a thought.

The newer U87's just seem to be a little to "bright" for my taste. They really do change a lot though based on your preamp situation. I have a 30+ year old U87 though and it is an amazing mic. Floors the new ones in my opinion. Not even all that similar either.

Many people don't consider the new Neumanns to be Neumanns at all. They're built by Sennheiser now I think. Do some research because I think the old Neumann people started a new mic company, and I know several people at gearslutz.com would give you some good recommendations for an alternative to a U87.

You're probably referring to MicroTech Gefell

Man, that's a rare situation. Go to a high end studio with lots of high end mic's and record your singer with an assortment. That'll tell you what to buy. Otherwise you're just throwing darts with a blindfold.

Yeah, Sennheiser owns Neumann now, Gefell is now what most people consider the real Neumann. The link someone posted has the history of Neumann/Gefell.

We cant afford to go to a studio. We are borrowing a mic from a high end studio that is why cost is not an issue. :)

U47. Great mic. Buy used from a Beatle's fan.

i've never tried either of these (and probably never will), but
wunder audio makes a nice u-47 clone which has gotten rave reviews and there are the new telefunken usa elam251's...
i have a neighbor who has a 70's u87 with the innertube mod which sounds awesome
