Networked guitars? How does that work.

I was reading a article on new ways they are recorindg instruments in places like Nashville.

They showed a network cable directly wired to a guitar. It was built in. I suppose they have some kind of analog to digital converter built into the guitar as well.

I work on networks for a living and could see where they would want a network after going digital, but I don't know what they are really doing with these guitars.

How does this all work? What exactly are they doing?
 
maybe they were using cat5, but for a balanced analogue signal...

5 cores, 2 for power in, 3 for signal out.

Well, a balanced out from a guitar would be a great idea, it's already been implemented on a few of the high end basses.

I know for a fact that some of the *REALLY* expensive bass guitars (with active electronics) have a balanced out, but also take phantom (48v) power to run them.

Understandably, most guitarists spit at the thought of active electronics in the guitar,as the main objective of most guitarists is to dirty up the sound as much as possible. - not keep the signal clean and 'strong'.
Also, with active electronics - you may not need a DI box either (more food for thought)

Having 5 separate cores to carry signal as well as power is significantly better than trying to carry power on signal wires.

Some of you may know that it's a BAD idea to carry DC power over a normal jack. There is a point in the jack socket where the metal contact touches both points at the same time. Instant short! Not good for ANY electronics.

On Top of that, Networked cable should have the performance for analogue audio. and it's a damn site cheaper than guitar cable....

All in all, i think it's a good idea.

Sounds like Gibson's magic system, it uses ethernet style cable to transmit digital audio.

But I hate Gibson for all of the music technology companies that they bought and let die.

BOYCOTT GIBSON!!!!
