Hello my question concerns the "Monitor Mixer" page on the M Audio Control Panel thing.

First of all my signal chain goes like this:
microphone--->dmp3 preamp--->audiophile--->mixer--->studio monitors

Okay now is the monitor mixer supposed to control actual sound levels of what's going in and out of the sound card?

For example, the WavOut 1/2 Input shows activity on the peak meters when I'm playing back music(and i can hear it on my studio monitors as well) but moving the faders up and down do nothing to change the sound, nor does muting it or panning left and right.

Same thing goes for the H/w In 1/2 Input: the peak meters show activity when i speak into the microphone, but changing volume and muting or panning does nothing.

Normally I wouldn't worry about this stuff, but I just bought all this new stuff(sound card, dmp3, studio projects b1 microphone) and the recording quality sounds almost no better(just slightly louder) than when I used to record with nothing but a cheap $5 computer mic, which is extremely frustrating. So i'm trying to figure out why and i'm starting with the sound card.
Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

Yes the monitor mixer is the main control for the inputs and outputs. The Patchbay/Router section is for routing the soundcard inputs directly to the outputs. Pages 17-21 of the manual explain it pretty well. :)

Yes I know the monitor mixer is the main control for the inputs and outputs; my question was how come i can't control anything with it?

I've got a 2496 too and it is confusing.
You can't control the input volume on the card I believe, even if you lower the fader sliders. You've got to lower the volume on the preamp. In mixer mode the sliders will effect the volume but the peak meters will continue to show the input volume of your preamp.
As far as panning goes, that should working. Try different combinations on the patchbay/router even if they don't make sense.

I'm not by my audio PC so I may be talking shit here :eek:

Someone who knows what they're talking about should chime in shortly and be able to help.

Go to the Patchbay/Router tab under H/W out 1/2 and select "monitor mixer". Now go to the Monitor Mixer tab and the faders should work.

wow i thought i tried doing that but obviously i didn't. it worked, thanks a lot!
