Don't care if it's multi-fx or not. Had an old Zoom 2020 that had horrible switching time, but it had the best sustain and a sound I really liked (ie. 80s ). Thing finally died on me a couple weeks ago.

So I went to the guitar shop and looked at some new Zoom stuff, in particular the G2.1. Can't say I had any luck with it.

I know it's kinda out of style, but what's a good pedal for shredding? I want something new btw. Don't really have the room for an amp setup, just looking to record into my comp.

Boss Metal Zone for me. Its difficult but I can dial in what I need in about 10 minutes. Alot of people complain about the NIN type of distortion but you can definitely get other kinds too, if you really want to find it.

If you're recording direct (no amp), then you should probably look into the various amp modelers rather than just a single "stompbox' distortion pedal (like the metal zone, which really needs to be driving an amp). The usual suspects are the POD and V-amp, J-Station, etc. Also check out the Damage Control Demonizer. I don't do metal, so I don't know what you might prefer -- best to check them out for yourself at a music shop.

Check out the distortions I came up with using my GT-8 on my soundclick. One is simulating the old Boss orange DS-1 and the other guitar is the OD distortion. If you like those check out the ME-50 that's cheaper. Check out the www.bossus.com website the have interactive windows with great samples.

I have a Carvin Tone Navigator and it is the best I have heard for going direct.

That said, I have messed around with a PodXT, but it seems I can only get chunky modern rock out of it.

I will check out the Boss ME-50, though.

you aint messed around with it enough in that case

& the 80s sound, go to a music shop & spend an afternoon trying out various pedals, the go to would probably be the boss metalzone

if you can get to a music shop with an iso booth take your amp & guitar, show the assistant that you have hard manna (cash) & make the mofo work for ya IE try every damn shredster pedal in there (within your budget of course)

OK I'll correct myself..............podXT live for straight computer recording & Engl are pretty good as well

see if you can wangle the shop to give you pedal boards on approval.........

I Orginally posted the Boss Metal Zone, but then I saw your post about not having an amp setup wich you would need with that pedal.

If you reall want the 80's tone and a new unit go for the Boss GT-8 Guitar Effects Processor

If you do not mind buying used get a Roland GP-100 off ebay.

I have the Roland, and it is totally 80's sounding. The Boss GT8 is built in the same way.

I used to have a GT5 untill some large drunken mama stood on it & promptly fucked it muttering "it's not my fault, I'm just drunk". I got it fixed & promptly sold it

a shredding buddy of mine has a GT8 & it's cool although I prefer the XT live board myself

i honestly think they are on of the worst pedals ever. way too much gain with no tone.

Definitely if you already have a good pre-amp, the Metal Zone would be the cheaper way to go, but I would not record right from the pedal.

It makes sense too, did they have multi effects back then? NOPE. But anyways the PODxt is too rock n rollish,so is the GT-8. The ME-50 is the heaviest of the three, but dont be fooled if you hear the samples. Those recordings cannot sound like that without micing an amp or running it through a preamp and premixing it and all that pro shit.

digitech is worth a try i own a gnx3 and the gains are nice even better than my marshall fully cranked.I also own a boss mt-2 nice pedal but u gotta be carefull how u set them

PODxt is horrible for shred, you need a lot more harmonic colour and depth. The Boss MetalZone is great for chunky rhythms but falls flat for lead (if you are a tone freak like me who only plays shred), the GT-8 or GT-Pro would be my best advice for DI recording (Digitech GN-3 or 4 is also worth a look).... unless of course you have a big budget, then get a Triaxis!!!

ADA Mp-1 on eBay= $120 or so. Their Ampulator or Microcab would be great, but rare and expensive. The B******** Vamps have a surprisingly decent cab sim, from clips I've heard, so that may be the cheapest way in.

Sniff around the clips here, and see if something sounds close to what you want.

Oo! Just thought... I've been kicking around the idea of grabbing one of those Epi. Valve Jr's for use with my Mp-1's, I'm betting it will be bonerriffic! Could be a good low-volume recording solution, if you're not trying to get power amp grind from the Jr. Even so, a VJ head, a 1x12 cab, and a little iso box would be pretty awesome too, I'd guess.
