Ok.....I'm new to the recording thing. I need to know what would be a good piece to join my pc to my Yamaha AWG recorder/Mixing Board etc. I also want to do some midi dumps into my processors for my guitar from my PC. I have the following equipment & software please tell me how it should work with one another:

Dell 8200 that has:
Pro Tools LE 6.4 M-Box
Acid Pro 5.0 & all of Sonys software for looping/audio/dvd etc.

Then I have:
Mackie 16-channel mixing board
Yamaha AWG-16 portable recorder
and obviously my guitar processors and amps

What piece(s) am I missing to connect everything to my PC so I can utilize everything to it's fullest? I would prefer a rack mountable piece. Do I even have enough stuff?

Thanks!

Don't personally own any of those interfaces, but I think the Yamaha uses an ethernet connection to pc for downloading .wav and .aiff files. Doesn't the M-box use USB or Firewire? I think you have plenty of groovy hardware already. Do you have manuals for these devices. Cable routing is usually one of the first things covered in the manual.

oh, and "midi dumps" are accomplished by way of a midi connection from pc to midi device, which both of the units you mentioned should have.

Thanks....

Thanks for your help. I can't help but feel like a dumb***. But I'm one of those people that never reads the manuals to any great degree. And I do have every manual. I know, it's sad. I think I was really looking to find a nice rackmountable usb/midi interface as a go between for these pieces. I'm still learning. There is sooo much. -Zen

If you want to keep up with technology, you'll have to upgrade your software yearly $200 and your hardware every six months ($1000) LOL. Tascam has a nice looking rackmount FW1084 I think it is, and the Mackie ONYX firewire is available in rackmount too. Been considering both myself, but I always troll their Message boards for horror stories before I buy. Every piece of hardware has horror stories by the way.

By the way, I might be a sucker for that AWG16G if you decide to let it go some day. I need a portable simultaneous 8-in solution, and that might be just what the doctor ordered.

Pretty much the only way to get your Aw16G tracks into your pc is to burn wav files onto cd then import. There is no ethernet connection. If you're into midi, the 16G does do that, but not for file transfer. Many 16G users tend to record their tracks then import into a pc/Mac for mastering. If you eventually set up your pc for recording and have adequate interface, then you really could do without the aw16g.

btw- I have a site with many 16G users if you have any questions about it. Just click onmy homepage to get there.
