Im recording with an old tascam porta. and i have this problem. When im recoring all my levels are good riht at 0 usually. but when i play it all back the needles barely move and the sound is really quiet. any ideas on what im doing wrong??

Well, first of all, you are doing the typical newbie-mistake of having useless topic. :) Sure, you need help, but with what? People that knows EVERYTHING about Tascam stuff might not even read this, because they don't know it's about Tascam. Almost EVERYNODY needs help, thats why you post. A better topic would be "Problem with recording levels on Tascam porta" or something.

Now, to the problem: I have no idea. I've never used a Tascam. But it sounds like your not actually recording anything. On some portas there is a switch to switch between what the meters are listening too. Maybe when you record, they are set to show the mix levels, but you record a direct signal, so you don't actually record anything?
Just a hunch...

newguy,

First, clean and demagnetize the tape heads and components. Try recording again. If this doesn't work, take it to a tech for assessment.

Funny... my Tascam 688 was like that at first when the dbx noise reduction was turned on. I no longer have that problem, but then, I also cleaned the heads since then.
