Audio Bum
I'm remixing a couple songs to show to a small label so I can try and get some work from them. My place sucks for mixing and I'm getting burned out on these songs from all the A/B testing so I need some fresh ears. Please be as critical as you like.

The original mixes were done by a good mixer up in Seattle but they were a bit too dull sounding. I tried to get a more rich and full sound but they still seem to be lacking to me.

"Wayside"
I'm starting to think the mix is a bit too heavy on the right side. How does the kick sound?

"Roundabout"
If you've downloaded this before you're probably as sick of it as I am. I added some stuff during the verses and on my system the bass is thumping the sub perfectly. How is the bass on your system?

Thanks-
Travis

Listening on M-Audios SP8Bs. The bass on Roundabout sounded good to me. Clear and distinct. I found myself wanting to turn it up just a tad but that's just me..I tend to overdo bass sometimes.

The kick on Wayside sounded just a bit "boxy" to me. I wanted a little more whump out of it. Love the tone on that acoustic guitar.

That's my worthless 2 cents. Gotta hit the hay.

Good job.

Wayside - I like that song, but who gives a shit, eh? This is about mixes. :D

The "woo hoos" are too loud, I think.

You know, the first thing that hit me about this mix after it kicked in were the bass and kick. They sound decent enough, but they MIGHT be overdone/hyped. I can't really tell unless I listen in my car, lol. It's such a fine fucking line between "perfect" and "craps out" when it comes to the low end for me that I really kinda' hate offering opinions on the low end. I think the mix is fine, but I know you'll listen on a ton of stuff to make sure.

"Roundabout" sounds a lot better to me. There was something too flat about the first mixes. I'm still not a fan of the lead tones in either tune...too middyish. Like "boxy," but the one in Roundabout has always been that way. That "chucking" guitar in Roundabout is either new, or has been brought out much better...I never noticed it before.

Something worth pointing out, although I have no idea what it means. Whenever I hit the "loudness" or "rock" presets on my stuff, there is a much more drastic difference in both mixes than I'm used to hearing on most commercial mixes. Maybe that's a good thing, or maybe it means the mixes may sound radically different on different systems (which is my guess).

Honestly Travis...if I heard either of these for the first time out of the blue without knowing anything about the mixes, the only thing that I might notice as being a touch out of place would be the woo hoos on Wayside..(well, and that horrible fade after the crash which I'm sure you'll fix, lol).

Oh, and the stereo imaging seemed fine to me, but I didn't check them out on the cans.

As an aside, I know you have to be sick of listening to these, but it's a strong band. I like Tonic a lot. Who knows if their time has passed, but I hope you continue to work with these guys.

I'll give the songs a listen but stay away from my ears....

I liked roundabout the best by far. i like that tremelo sound you have at the beginning on the guitar. A very good sounding mix to me. Very open and spread out. its hard to describe. Now all you have to do is open up steinberg wavelabs and
1. compress
2. crank volume up
3. repeat.
haha just kidding, damn the industry!!

I listened to Wayside. Very clean mix. GREAT tune. I like the kick sound but it seems a point or two too hot. This is taking things to a VERY fine point as it's a pretty good mix the way it sets.

Wayside--What Track Rat said--the kick is kinda woofy or poofy or something-the snare doesnt seem to have much high end action to it. Likes the guitar tone better when he plays chords than during the solo-might stick out a bit much that solo-for my taste. The vocals are really well tracked in my opinion they sound real good and sit well in the mix.

Hey Tex,
Very nice tune man, and "very nice" vocs. Stereo imaging sounded fine to me. From my cans, the bass sounded a bit dominant. Nobody else mentioned it, so maybe its fine..... it just struck me as a touch up front. As i mentioned i really dug the vocs in this (wayside btw).....nice job!

What Guernica said, lol.

I'm only listening over a pair of 7506s, but the mix sounds really good to me. There is something strange about the kick, like the others mentioned. Its not that its too loud, but sort of the way it interacts with the bass makes it sound kind of resonant, maybe? The only other thing that kind of irked me is the acoustic guitar panned to the left is sort of like a persistant quarter note sounding blahblhablha...what I'm trying to say is that all I'm hearing from it during some parts is the initial attack of the strumming and not much afterwards. I know that makes zero sense, but bear with me. Its also largely due to the fact that I'm listening on headphones. This is a phenomenal song, though.
