Hey everybody!!! My band The Terminal Velocity just finished recording/mixing our song "By Storm". We would love it if you all could give us some feedback/criticism on the mix, mastering, arrangement etc.....
Also, if you could let us know what genre came to mind when you first heard the song that would be helpful.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Listened to it on cheap AT $15 headphones.

I don't listen to much alternative, so I don't have much experience.

It sounds over compressed. Especially the drums and vocals. Did you crank up the loudness of the mixdown?

Musicianship is spot on. Songwriting-wise, I felt I've heard this before.

thanks alot for the comments! yeah, your right on, we did overcompress the master mix in the attempt to get competetive levels. Any advice on how to get the highest levels without as much compression????

Well, its hard to get it 'loud' without a shitload of experience and good gear. And the loudness really tires my ears, especially on headphones. I'm sure most people here would agree on that.

On my song which I just submitted, I didn't really push it much, just a bit of compression over the peaks, threw on a brickwall, and got it up to -18 db RMS with very little trouble. Because of the thickness of your track, I could get it to -15, maybe a bit more with no problem, but beyond that.....eck.

After the intro there's a distinct lack of dynamics (everything is as loud as everything else).
The drummer seems to be a little lost in the 1st verse.
Could be a good song but fatigue soon takes away the attraction.
The snare sound a bit errr.
How to get loud with out loads of compression - um, mix it well and take it to a mastering engineer.

I really dig the song, nice chord structures, good energy.

About the compression comments. Just because the mix lacks a "certain" amount of dynamics doesn't invalidate it, imho. If you are going for that sound that's ok by me. You know you've gone too far when the "chest pressure" "punch" "snap" whatever you want to call it, goes away. You can be the judge of that since you have access to the unmastered version.

I have two general opinions. For me the hard panned and bright guitars compete for attention especially during the vocal sections. If you agree with that then there are a number solutions I'm sure you can find. In my mind the average listener wants a more or less single subject to present itself in the music and everything else should support that subject.

I think the kick could use a little bit of click just to define it better.

Very nice composition, If it came on the radio I would not change the channel. That is saying something these days given the overwhelming choices in music out there.

Sounds like U2 on the intro, then shifts to something a bit harder - close to 80's pop rock with edgier guitars ...I guess that's still Rock.... Clean recording/great execution....
