I am choosing between the following:

Acer 10x8x32x for $179
Sony 8x4x32x for $179

Both retail. Comments on both drives? I need some opinions ASAP.

Ya right. When we wondered where you are, you just ignored us. Now that you need something, you're right here pestering us. Man-o-man...:)

Wish I could help, but I don't know the answer to that Slack.

Sony out of those choices... ACER's are bad for CD Technology, replaced many. Make some ok Cases though. Check out the Panasonic 8x4x32 good drive in that price range.

Jeez, do you live out in pig country? In the Detroit area the mass retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp Useless) are pushing 6x - 10x IDE CDR drives for $99-$129 range.

I just bought a TDK Velo 12x for $299, but with $100 in rebates. It has technology that supposedly makes buffer underruns impossible. We'll see...

HP

I have an HP 8+4-32 and I've had real good luck don't know about any others. What ever you get let us know how it is. Later, Donny!!! Price sounds good I paid $250.00.

Thanks guys,

I went with the Sony. I got it running now and it seems to work great.

The worst install I've had in a long time though.

Things to know:

1) Adaptec's EZ CD Creator likes to work alone. To get it to work with other burning apps is difficult at times...especially Sony's CD Extreme! (which isn't even worth installing) :)

2) When you uninstall EZ CD Creator, it does NOT fully uninstall. It leaves pointers in the registry that can over-ride cdrom.sys and can leave your system cdrom-less.

HKeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFCl-087002B El0318}

Delete keys "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" and restart. Yippee!

Even if you've uninstalled EZ CD Creator, you're still using its alternate driver...which you won't care about perhaps until you try to install other burning software!

3) If you ever install adaptec's ez cd creator on Windows 2000, both versions 3.5x and 4.0xx, be sure to download ALL of the updates from Adaptec. Then install the software as follows:

a. Run the install from the CD.
b. When it asks you to reboot, DO NOT REBOOT.
c. Run the patch(es). There will be two patches to 3.5 and as of now there is just one patch to 4.02.
d. Reboot.

If you don't do things in that order you risk your machine NOT being able to restart. If your machine doesn't restart, BTW, boot in safe mode and uninstall ez cd creator and if necessary perform the registry hack above.

Welp, I just figured I'd write this down in at least one place, because I'll certainly forget 90% of it by next week.

Nice choice Slack....

You are just being a copy cat of me! ;)

My Sony drive has performed killer for a couple years now. Paid a lot more then you did for it though.....:(

Actually I did remember you raving about yours, which is one of the reasons I got it.

This was the "value" model though so it came with the cheaper software. That's ok though, I'll still just use EZ CD Creator which works well enough.

I must say the Sony 4x and 6x units are use at work seem to work fine, although (like all our high-use drives) they seem to wear out after 12-18 months.

So if you leave the included software alone- you're safe?
No hacks required?
