My objective is to record a 3 piece rock band, guitar, bass drums (small 4 piece kit)

After doing some research and talking to a few people, I will be buying the following equipment in about 2 weeks:

Mac Ibook with 1.25 ram
running protools LE
Digi 002 rack
Digimax LT Preamp
Wave native power pack plug ins

I'm still in the dark about microphones. I want good mics, but my budget is limited. Maybe $1200 for mics.

Any thoughts or suggestions on microphones?
Best mic for the kick?
Best mic for the guitar? (My amp sounds best played loud, real loud)
Best mic for the vocals ?

Thanks in advance.

I'd try this:

Countryman DI for the bass.
2 SM 57's--one for snare; one for your guitar cab
Shure Beta 52 for kick; which you can also use for bass if you decide to reamp it later
2 Marshall MXL 603s for drum overheads
Sennheiser E603 for rack tom
Audio Technic ATM25 for floor tom
Large or medium diaphragm condenser mic for the room and possibly vocals (there are a bunch of these to choose from)
If you have a bit left over you could pick up a Sennheiser E609 silver to use on your guitar cab as well.

You don't specify whether you will be recording the band all at once, or overdubbing. Here are some mics to look at:

1 Electrovoice RE20 ($400 new) - a solid large diaphragm dynamic mic that is good on kick drum, guitar/bass cabs, and some voices

1-2 Shure SM57 ($80 each new) - another workhorse dynamic that is good for snare and guitar cabs. also o.k. for toms, if you decide to mic those individually

2 Studio Projects C4 ($320 new) - These small diaphragm condensers will be good for drum overheads and acoustic guitar (if needed).

1 Audio Technica AT4040 or AT4050 ($300-$500 new) - You'll want at least one good large diaphragm condenser (for vocals - also could be used on toms and as a room mic) and these would be good places to start.
