Harvey,

Do you know what the difference between the 92S and the 92.1S is?

I looked all over the Gefell site to no avail...

Thanks.

I believe it's the same mic. Call Fletcher at Mercenary Audio; he just came back from visiting Gefell.

It's basically the same mic. The 92.1 is updated, lower noise and a few other tweaks. Fletcher should know, as Harvey mentioned. So should Tom at Tidepool Audio.

Tom has the Mic I'm thinking about purchasing. I was planning on purchasing a fairly high end vocal mic here in the next week or so, and after reading up on Gefells, I thought that might be a good way to go. However, Nobody (Tom included) seems to know FOR SURE what the differences are between the two.

The difference between the Gefell 92S and the 92.1S is.... the 92S had a heater voltage adjustment inside the microphone. It was made for running cable lengths of longer than 50 meters. Gefell wound up not being satisfied with having it in the body of the mic. With the 92.1S the heater voltage adjustment was moved and is housed in the power supply. That's the only difference between the two models.

If you're looking at getting a 92S for the studio and will just be doing normal length cable runs, you won't even have to worry about it.

Thanks Dot! :D

re:Gefell M92S

NL5, the information you have received so far is only partially correct. In addition to the heater voltage adjustment location change, they also changed from an EC92 triode tube to an EF86 pentode tube. There was some additional RF noise rejection circuitry added (a bad idea which most people who use them to record have removed). According to Oliver Archut at TAB Funkenwerks, the output transformers on the newer versions were also improved.

I personally own an M92S and a UM92S (the multipattern version) and have found them to be excellent mics. I highly recommend that you replace the original East German tube with a Telefunken tube. You will notice an immediate improvement in the sound quality. As far as I can tell, the mic was built according to the same schemeatic as a Gefell UM57 but with improved components.

Hope this helps, Dave
