Okay. This place is mind-blowing, so now I post. I have a yamaha mt4x, a couple condensers, a little behringer mixer, a twin reverb, guitars, piles of material, etc. Now, I've figured out how to get a pretty good recording, dubs and such, but I am stuck on the mixdown. Once I've got the tracks down, what do I do? Do I have buy a DAT machine or something? I want to get the stuff on to cd, that's all. I planned on getting it on tape and then giving it to a friend who can somehow, seems like magic, turn a tape into a cd.

Can I plug the yamaha into my computer and make a wav file and thus fiddle with the thing on some multitrack software and burn?

College kid, not much cash, what are my options?

I bought the yamaha thinking I was set. Not set it seems. I know nothing about these soundcards people speak of, don't understand how I can get the analog bit onto the computer. At this point I'd be happy if I could just mix the thing down so it would play like a normal cassette. Somebody turn me on please.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, orticjones- I replied to your thread in Mixing before I saw this one here.

This is a better place for that topic.. so we should carry on that discussion here.

Some of the details I was wanting over there you posted here.

That's one of the reasons that cross-posting isn't a good idea. Let me be the first to ask "please don't cross post."

So, yeah, get thee to radio shack and get that cable to plug the mt4x into the stereo line input of your soundcard. If you don't have a card with a stereo line in... things get more complex.

You'll need recording software- but if you're just doing stereo stuff there are some great free ones out there. Audacity comes to mind.

Other than that, do you have a stereo tape deck you can mix to? Then send the tape to your wizard friend?

take care,
And welcome aboard (again).
Chris

sorry about the cross post.

where is my soundcard? i've never seen any inputs that looked promising. can i buy one? what do i want? how much?

i don't think i have a cassette deck that will work, maybe i do. how can i check. if not, where do i get one and what exactly do i need?

my knowledge seems to break down here. if i could get it on the computer, i would be alright i think. but, i don't see where i can mainline anything into the computer.

i've recorded before into a computer using an analog mackie mixer, but it went through some converter box; there was also a dat machine, the works. i dont have the funds for that. will any cheap little tape deck work, what kind of inputs do i need? doesn't look like there are rcas out of the yamaha, there are outs but i don't know what kind of cables they take. maybe my little mixer has rcas, and i could run it back through there in route to tape deck or other future destination.
