I'm hoping you guys could help me out. I hadn't used my Tascam 48 in a while and I was giving it a test run contemplating selling it. It worked fine at first but then it would not engage into play (rewind and ff no problem). At first I thought it was a tension arm problem because they were freaking out when I engaged it.

Testing it without the tape in has me thinking otherwise. The capstan roller is moving only sometimes. When I first engage play it moves but then slows to a stop. I am concerned the motor is going. Or is it something different?

I am not much of a tech guy so any input would be great. I am thinking of selling the machine and if it requires a new capstan motor I will have to sell as a repair. The heads are in great shape.

Thanks,

Jeff

You have a so called Electro- Mechanical problem.Which means that you have to see if the mechanism is engaging accordingly. To do this, you must be familiar with the theory of operation of that particular unit. Now if you are not experienced, do not even think about it.
Your best shot is, take to a reputable technician for a mayor overhaul. What I charge for a job like that Minimum,250 not including parts or simple parts like belts etc. After all, this is a vintage unit that will be worth twice as more not far down the road.
