whats up? I'm new to this forum and i hope you will be helpful in solving my problems, and i hope i will be able to help others... with my lame intro out of the way, i was hoping someone would be able to help me figure something out for my home studio/recording setup...

i have attached a graphical layout to help you understand. i'm planning on making a recording booth out of a closet downstairs, and since it's far away from my computer, i need a way to communicate with the artist. i have 2 mics, and i want to use the extra to talk to the artist, which should be able to be heard in his headphones. in my headphones, i want to hear myself, the booth mic, and the music/instrumental. i want the headphones downstairs in the booth to be able to hear me, the artist, and the music... basically the same in both headphones haha. like i said, the booth is far away and i would like to have ONLY ONE cable running from the mic downstairs to my audio interface next to my computer. so my ultimate question is: how can this be done? im pretty sure that i would have to use more than one cable, but i want some sort of "box" downstairs so the artist can adjust his phone/mic levels. i want to know what this "box" would be called (similar to a computer audio interface, except the fact that it doesn't need to be connected to a computer).

what is the best and most affordable way i can accomplish this?

thanks for your time!

by the way, my music is on myspace, if you are interested... myspace.com/1800nicabus

Just record the singer in the same room as your computer....all that closet stuff is going to be a big waste of time, and the vocals will suck in the closet.

Wasn't that easy and affordable? :)

well i guess i should have mentioned this... i'm in the detached garage, and upstairs is our office where me, my dad, my grandfather, and some others work all day everyday. i needed to find a way to record some people during the day, which, recording in the closet (with acoustic treatment) downstairs would be the best possible way. im going to make it happen, but i was hoping for some insight on some kind of hardware that would be suitable for my situation

The i/o box could just be a small but high quality mixer. Or you could even have the mic skip the mixer and go straight up to the Multimix and just have a headphone amp down there... or wireless headphones to make it that much easier. It's all about what your budget is and how far you want to go. I'd save a lot of money for acoustic treatment, though.

Your right that you will need more then one cord going to your basement. Figure one cord per direction. You could simply run a cord to a headphone amp and that would even allow them to adjust the volume in the phones themselves. But you will need one cord from your mic, and one cord to the amp. So at most if it is just headphone levels you want them to be able to change, pick up a little headphone amp and your done.

thanks stealth prod! yea, i feel so dumb for even asking that question because i was thinking about having to run 2 cables before i posted. i am still unsure about what i will do, but i will probably end up running 2 cables AND get a headphone amp down at their end. so i was looking for long XLR and 1/4" to1/4" cables (in a B&H catalog from several months ago hahaha), and i could not find a 100' 1/4" male to male cable (although i did look one up on B&H this morning for a little less than $80)............sorry for rambling! well, i've heard B&H is overpriced, so if any of you prefer a better site (that sells everything audio pretty much), please let me know! ..and thanks for the help!

You might want to check out Monoprice.com for some of the cables. Found some decent deals on there.
