These are some friends of mine that I recorded:

The vocals sound very harsh to me. Any ideas on how to tone it down?

Any other suggestions on the overall mix are welcome.

Thanks!
I'm not sure which song you want us to listen to as you never specified in your title or post. So I listened to Jezebel.....
- female singer sounds fine, clean and clear. a little repetitive in the lyrics
- the overall mix is great
Can you be a bit more specific ?

Sure, sorry about that.
If you have time to listen to all of them I would appreciate it. These are samples from a full length album.

The one I think I'm most concerned with is Robbie. The vocals seem a little harsh in the high end or something, or maybe I'm hearing things.

Also, on my home stereo the bass is sounding kind of boomy but sounds fine everywhere else.

Any suggestions on the mix would be helpful. I'm just looking for some outside ears to evaluate things in general. I've been working on this so long I don't feel like I can listen objectively anymore.

Thanks.

Robbie

The level is a little low compared to most stuff I listen to here. Maybe up the volume on the mix a bit.

I'm not getting a great deal of harshness on the vocals on this one either.
If the highs are too much for you you could take some highs off the vocals. Around 2k is where a great deal of the upper voice sits.

What microphone/pre-amp/effects are you using on the vocals?

Thanks, I might just be hearing things that aren't there at this point. I think I'll take a few days off and come back with fresh ears.

U87 through a focusrite octopre, the reverb is a lexicon pantheon plug-in.

I agree with ido on the toning down of the highs in the vocals. Along with his suggestion, take a look at how you have them EQ'd in general. Sometimes you can cut down on a little "air" by reducing the upper frequencies (8-10k+) a little. Just something to try. Good luck!

Here is my take.
First off , let me say that in general the performances are fine.
As far as the mix decisions , I don't know the genres well, but MY personal preference would be to have the vocal a little more warm and bold as well as the stand up bass. Listening over computer speakers (that may be my biggest mistake) the voice sounds behind the guitar. The guitar has a nice warm sound but soundstage wise is forward and to the right of the voice. The voice is centered but back standing near the drums, and the Bass is somewhere far stage left.

I guess what I am trying to say in a discombobulated way is it does not sound like I would imagine them setting up for a live gig.

Sounds like to much room in the female vocals at times. I hear what your talking about as far as an irritating tone in places. I don't think the room is helping, but my first thought would be doing some gain automation for the offending parts. perhaps mess with the eq at around 1000 to 1500 and try to kill some of the low honk somewhere around 250hz. If you have a verb on with a eq try pulling down from 300hz down or so on the return.

I only listened to jezebel.

Over all a nice recording. Not my style so I can't comment much.

Good Luck.
