I'm having problems finding "custom user text" in edit profile. I'm so sorry to bother you,but please help.

Maybe that's like the avatar - you only get it after a minimum number of posts.
Try typing it in the location box - I don't know how many characters it will hold, or in the signature box, where it will appear below the last line in the text of the post.

The John Hardy M1 is great pre for clean. I have used it on alot of things, and it really shines on acoustic stuff. But at times i find it too clean for anything else.

Neumann U87, Soundelux U95, AKG C414 (etc) into the John Hardy M1 and directly into the Protools 96 i/o.

I record acoustic music and am always thinking about pres. I have a Millennia HV-3B now, and am in need of more channels. I am considering either a Pendulum or a Gordon, the latter I have never heard of until I learned of it on another forum. It looks and is described as extremely awesome, and better than anything else, buy very pricey, around 3500, which is even more than the Pendulum. If you do acoustic music, I would seriously consider a Millennia (1700) or the Pendulum (2300), though the ISA focusrites come highly recommended (and of course the Red). I would also not write off the Avalon AD2022 or the Trident S20. The Avalons are very pricey also, but on ebay you can sometimes get them for under 2K. I got an Avalon AD2044 compressor off ebay for around 1500. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, vsimmons! I've never heard of the Gordon before and will look into it, even though its at the high end of my budget. I also considered getting an Avalon. What strikes me as odd, though, is that almost every serious recording studio has Avalons racked up; but if you asked them, they never use them for tracking vocals! I bet they only got them coz everybode thinks you have to have them. Focusrite Red would be an option, too, but given that I have a Focusrite already, I wanted to expand my sound options by getting something that sounds different. I think I will oder the Langvin next week, even though the Neve clones are siginifcantly cheaper on Ebay (e.g., the Vintech Dual 72 for $1245 including shipping). BTW: I was tracking vocals with my new Gefell M930 tonight and I am blown away by the lush sound! What a mic!

Gefell looks like a sweet mic. I checked it out online. For my next mic, I was thinking about a U87. I already have an M149, and boy, I love that mic! My Millennia pre is very good for acoustic guitar, and good on vocals, but if you belt into the mic, it gets a little harsh up top. I am on the prowell for another pre. Before you buy one check this out:http://www.3daudioinc.com/. This guy is a Nashville studio owner, and has recorded the same singer through the same mic through 30-35 of the best pres! He also did the same thing with mics. I just ordered it, so I cannot review it for you, but man! You want to talk about an awesome thing for someone like me that usually relys on other peoples opinions. I may go with the AD2022, which would match my AD2044 nicely, but there may be something better. The Gordon is probably worth it, but I can't hear it. The guy from 3D wrote me and said that the Gordon would be on the next CD, but it is not on this one

D&R spamaroonie

Maybe I am a little late jumping in on this post, but I have a few things I would like to say concerning this whole D&R mess.

First off, I am not a D&R rep, nor am I a dealer, nor am I a distributor or in ANY way connected with D&R with the exception that I am an extremely happy client and proud owner of a D&R console.

I bought my console used on Paul's (PRW) advice and got it for an incredible price and been extremely pleased with it. It does EVERYTHING he claimed it would. The only reason I have not bought some of the standalone D&R preamps is because I have a console with 50 of them already in it. Spam or no spam, what PRW posted was spot on. The preamps are extremely clean, high headroom, with a beautiful sounding high frequency extention to them. Realistically, there are only a couple of preamps for under $1000 that I would even consider buying (2 channel pres that is because Great River and UA both have nice mono pres at about $1000). Those two are the Sytek preamps, and the D&R preamps. In fact, I have always been impressed at how well the D&R preamps will hold their own against many MUCH more expensive preamps. There are a lot of really cool companies out there that don't really market their stuff except on places like this. I for one have been posting and reading in various forums now for many years and have found some really great non mainstream products from people just like Paul and am grateful that they chime in here and there. The bottom line is that he wasn't rude and/or malicious, so who cares if he mentions a product that he happens to believe in, even if he does work for them. In fact, living in the SLC area where certain cheaper brands are manufactured, I am glad he believes in the product that he represents. I have met plenty of people who work for some other manufacturers that would never reccomend the very same stuff they make.

Maybe in the future, instead of jumping someones case for mentioning a product that they rep, we could just mention nicely that it is bad etiquette for this forum. There are some other forums that are very accepting of that.

Its been a long time since I started this thread, so here's an update:

Well, unfortunatly not all funds came through I had hoped to purchase one of the above preamps with. So, instead, I bought ADM pre and eq modules, power supply and lots of cables and some connectors, and racked the whole thing up. It cost me $550 total and took me 4 weekends reading the block diagrams, soldering the units & drilling holes in the rack panel, but wow -- its sounds absotely amazing! Not a clean sound, but a full sound with lots of bottom end. I luv it, even though it was not what I inteded to get in the first place. I'm pretty happy I went that road, and I am hooked up on DIY projects since. My next projects will be racking up Telefunken and Neve modules

Thanks XSTATIC, whoever you are. It was my first time to visit any group and make comments to a forum. I told the group I was sorry for the "ad". I was telling the truth for whatever that's worth. As for c7sus, I sent him personal emails apologizing directly to him. He is one of those very angry people that you can't please with kind words. I refuse to get down on his level.

No problem Paul. This is Rob from Xstatic Studios in Smithfield, UT. In mid June I may be talking to you about a brand new Cinemix, or possibly even an Octagon, but I think an Octagon may be more than we need. My investor may have run into a large chunk of money and all of a sudden he wants to spend an exorbinant amount of it on a "personal" studio. A 3300 square foot personal studio) In the mean time, I may try and buy a few of the preamps for my mobile rack. I never really even thought about the D&R rack mount preamps, I just always think console. The more I think about it, the more I would like to have 4 channels or so of the rackmount ones since I am so darned familiar with the D&R sound now.

AS far as the ADM mic pre and EQ, good choice It sounds like you got a good price as well. Plus, after all the soldering and wiring, they probably have an intimate value to you now They seem to be one of those brands that many people seem to have kind of forgotten, but those who know love them. Good solid sound. Like you said, not really a clean preamp, but a warm pre without some of the extra high end fizz of so many of the newer designs.

Hi Rob, I'm glad you are happy with the D&R. I'll be glad to assist you in your future plans. The message above sorta confused me...... I didn't purchase an ADM mic pre. That was another person on the list. You know I would only use a D&R mic pre. Check out the Radar 24 track Hard Disk Recorder. I have the Radar Classic Pro in my studio and love it! Oh, by the way... I have my own studio now. D&R Cinemix, Radar 24, Echo Layla, Samplitude, NHT PRO Surround Monitoring system, and many other toys. This is fun!
