Need help now!!

Hi. I'm having problems with the darla card I just got. It plays back waves okay etc. But I can't record. I'm getting a mixer soon but for now I was trying to recording out of the headphone jack of my amp. This should work shouldn't it?? I don't get any signal at all when monitoring through any programs or the windows mixer. Am I doing something wrong here. My friend said it should work recording from the headphone jack to the computer without anything in between. Is he wrong.

just a little advice... dont tell them how you fried the card... besides saving your pride , im not sure if they would cover the damage... hehe ..

First of all, I've always heard that if you line an amp directly out to a mixer channel, the extremely hot (loud) signal would permanently damage the channel. Now, assuming this isn't the problem (if it is, you're gonna need a new Darla) go to the Windows mixer and select Options/Properties/Recording. Make sure any boxes that say "line" or "mic" are checked, and click OK. Pull all volume sliders near the top (be sure to lower them later). Now, plug in your guitar without an amp (you can use an effects box) and play. One of the channels should light up and you should hear what you're playing. To minimize noise, uncheck all the other input channels, exit the mixer, and record! If this doesn't work, post some more information about the program you are using.

Hi. I'm upset because I think I blew the sound cards inputs by using the headphone jack of my amp. About the program I was using, I was just using cooledit pro just to test to card. I tried everything you said but I didn't get any signal in the windows mixer or anything, so in other words the card is fried? I have warranty on it but that doesn't cover that does it? Well, anyways I'll have to phone Event electronics.

Event no longer covers warranty claims on the card. Don't freak out: Echo is the place to call. Event was the distributor, but no longer is. Echo is honoring all warranty claims on this line of sound cards.

Well, I just found out the warranty only covers the US. I'm in Canada, plus I baught it over the internet form the states. I think I'm screwed! Is there any way to check for a fried input? Is it hard to fix? AND, Can you fry an output?

As to frying an output; your symptoms sound more like a S/W selection routing the output to 3/4 on the breakout box. And can you fry it? Well 120V might do the trick. I'm not sure if shorting the line out would damage anything, since this signal is only around 300mV but I'm not going to try it with my Gina....

I agree with the good doctor. Headphone outs are kinda hot for line inputs, but not to the extent that they should cause physical damage. Would just be way too loud and distorted. Play with the input and output selections and RTFM a bit more and I bet you'll soon be breathing a sigh of relief...
