Hi guys recorded a track today with a friend and went quite well, its just in the chorus of the song, the music an backing vocals kinda drown out the vocals we put down, the verses sound fine its just the chorus, ive tried making it louder, eq and compression but not getting very far, any help would be appreciated, heres the link to the song so far....

I think that it's because your main vox have too much high end. It sounds like you put an exciter on there or something. This seems to me like it would make it hard for anything else to come out through the mix, especially background vox. Usually, you want the lead vox to be meaty and the background vox to be airy. This gives 2 advantages. 1) background vox sound like they are farther away, and 2) each can cut through the mix and compliment each other.

The 80's taught us that too much exciter on vox is a bad thing, so I would cut that back a bit and you will find it not so fatiguing and the background vox will come through better.

thing is, we recorded on a instrumental with those background vocals already on it so i cant controll them i can only mix my friends voice (the lead vocal) those background vocals on the chorus are drowning it out

The only thing you can really do is adjust the main vox then. Oh, wait, you're not talking about the choir are you? I just heard other bg vox and they were hard to hear.

If they are already mixed, then you will have a hard time doing anything with them. I would still try not adding so much high end to the main vox.

i dont care about the background vocals i want the main vocals to shine through, the background vocals are drowning my main vocals, in terms of EQ what can i do?

Hey, at least I'm leaving feedback, even if it is the exact opposite of what you originally asked.

Now that I actually understand the problem, my view has changed a little. I still think the vocals are very harsh. Did you do that because you wanted it to cut through? It does cut through, but is also very piercing.

I didn't think the vox were covered up though, but that's just me.

Now we're on the same page lol what can i do to get rid of the harshness and make it more smooth, thanks for the feedback much appreciated!

I just started a thread on harsh recordings. I'm hoping to find the same answer.

I generally can give advice about what sounds wrong with other people's songs, but when it comes to nailing down a good solution, that's when I get stuck. I'm not too pleased with my own eq capabilities.
