Ok so im about to upgrade and get a better mic...

my set ups like this...pro tools 8...m box pro 2....presonus eureka pre amp....rodes nt 1000 mic...i got just recently upgraded from samson 65a's to M-audio Bx8a's and i can hear alot of stuff i never could within peoples voices i dont like....

the budget i have for the mic is lik $1000-1200....

im recording vocals from rap to r&b even gospel and country....(i dont discriminate money all green)

but its now time to upgrade what are some sudjestions....everyone talkin about the u87 i aint ever heard it...want one but cant afford it...

also what kinda things should i be lookin at when buying a mic!!

The NT1000 is a respectable mike.

If you are hearing things in voices that you don't like, perhaps you need to think more about the quality of the voices.

LOL...that the one thing you cannot change...perhaps he just needs to have a decent dynamic to put in front of those voices.

not that im hearing stuff in their voices...its just i feel it aint as clear as it should be and it missing somethin to their voices...if that makes any sense....

oh and also what about the tlm 103 is that anything worth

They have mics out there that are clear as anything just like you seem to want...too bad they are designed for instruments...lol.

Vocal mics are more forgiving...if all I had was opera singers Id only pull out my shure KSM32...its the closest thing in a side address to what you are asking for.

Nope...most top of the line Shure KSM series and the AT40 series are better mics at arround $500...Neumann TLM103 is the bottom of thier line and isnt like thier other mics.

At $1200 you're so close I'd bite the bullet. No way I would spend money on other mics.

Contact some people selling U87's and tell them you only have $1200.

I did the mic "upgrade" dance from the early 1970's to the early 1990's and it didn't stop until I got some Neumanns. EV's to Shures to Sennheisers... you know the routine. The Neumanns have a distinct sound, like Zildjian, that you can get no other way, and the sound you've grown up with on the radio and CD's is largely (not entirely of course) the sound of vocals through Neumanns.

This is of course just my 1 guy out of 6.5 billion opinion.

You would have to find a very desperate seller for him to throw away over $1500 on a U87...good luck with that...and they are not that much better than an AT4047 or a KSM44 to justify the $3000 price tag...plus there are a bunch of really good U87 clones in the $1k-$1500 range that are worth the money too.

Reports arround here has them being noisy...like I said in an early post there are lots of very good choices in the 500 range...like the AT4047 is based on the sound of a u47 Neumann...with the Neumann you might impress a few clients, but you wont have the best bang for the buck.

Anyone without a picture Id be suspicious of...they can pad the feedback to fake looking like a good seller...how do you sell that ammount of stuff without owning a camera?...Id pass on that one...seems like its not on the level.

That was a completed listing, don't know if you noticed that.

I guess so...but is that is still kinda hokey.

All I know is that a guy with an excuse for no picture like that might be screwing people...it happens alot...it could be on the level...but I wouldnt trust him with $1300.

also what about a neumann m147 or m149?

Basically it looks like what you're seeing is a lot of good reports about a lot of different mics -which isn't to say it's untrue, it's even typical, but a ribbon for example is a whole different direction. They'll all do good but slightly different things for that matter.

You could build a mini Locker with that money buying used:

-Shure SM7b (a must have)
-Audio Technica AT4047 ($350 Used) or Shure KSM44 ($450 Used)
-Shure KSM32 ($300 Used) or Audio Technica AT4050 ($350 Used)
-Blue Baby Bottle ($300 Used)

Total $1200-$1400

yeah but isnt there a decent mic on the market thats more of a all around mic...the idea of buying 3-4 mics then gettin experienced wit each one to know when to use them is a long process...im really comfortable wit my nt1000 its a great mic and has lasted me almost 6 years...but i feel like i wanna get a newer mic wit a good warm sound to it...plus i need a tube inline somewhere
