Well i didn't get many replies on my last thread because it was probably too big of a file. I was wondering if you guys could listen to this guitar sample and tell me what you guys would do to make it sound better (ie what effects, how to mix it, turn down distortion etc, etc). I have an SM57 mic to my cab for the recording...but I'm really new to this and am struggling on how to make the sound good. I do have Cakewalk Sonar XL with all of the plugins too. Please help me out!

You can find the sample here

The guitar sounds good by itself, however how it will sit in a mix is quite a different thing.

have you tried some compression? Go with some heavy compression (in my opinion) and bring up the volume a bit...it needs to be "in your face"

doesn't sound bad although it's a bit high end sounding and crackly.. it's hard to say what to add without hearing it in a mix, but it's a decent start..

for fear of saying that it sounds like a gtr center jam... the sound is kinda fizzy and has no meat to it. Try moving the mic around the speaker more and jam it up close.... like pointing towards the cone part of the speaker..half way out to the edge. Sometimes less distortion when recording actually works out better and gives you a "meatier" sound without getting all nasty and such.... (aka fizzy). Stereo chorus aint a bad way to go for a fuller sound too.

Yup, I agree with Mixmkr.

I have a few questions:

Where is the mic in relation to the speaker?
What mic pre are you using?
What type of amp and cabinet is it?
Are you getting this tone primarly from master volume, in other words, how hard are you driving the final stage of the guitar amplifier?
