Before I get into what kind of gear I have, etc - can I get some initial thoughts, feedback/constructive criticism on this drum recording. Forgive the playing, it was basically just to try to put the kit through it's paces, checking levels, trying to find the best drum recording setup with the gear I have available.

Thanks

What's available?

What gear are you runnin? How you mic'ing the stuff?

Sounds like you'll be doing some metal huh...

Well it sounds pretty good for an mp3, I dont know the sound you are going for but to me it all sounds kind of dead and maybe gated. that might be the sound your going for so I dont know but I thought it was good except maybe the cymbols, and the high hat was a little dead or possible not their? Im no profesional though so its just my .02

Sounds very mono. If it's a one-mic recording, it's decent enough.

It seems like you could maybe get some more bass out of the mic, and tweak the highs to sound more natural. If it is one mic, you might want to balance it better to get more kick and snare and less toms?...

It is really hard to give advice when we don't know what you were using to record this with.

I have 5 mics available - 2 Shure SM57s, and a Shure 55 (I was using that on the kick), and a crappy Leader dynamic vocal mic, and a SP-B1. I need one of these for vocals, I was planning on using the B1 for that.

I had the Shure 55 in front of the kick's soundhole, one SM57 over the toms and snare from the front, and the other SM57 over the cymbals and the floor tom, from the front. I have that other dynamic that I could use somewhere, I was thinking of putting it on the snare after hearing how weak the snare sounded.

I already got some advice to roll of the mids on the cymbals, to get rid of some of that clang, which I will be sure to do, and raise the tom mic a little higher off the toms, which I have already done.

This just has to get me by a few more weeks. I have a Shure drum mic kit on layway, it has 3 more SM57s, and a PG52, and I was thinking of getting a couple of those joe meek overhead condensers to use with them.

Thanks!
mike
