Hello!

I have a computer with 2 physical hard drives that I have formated and plan to reinstall all my standard and audio programs onto.

This is my plan:

On hard drive 1 (master configuration) I plan to install XP and all everyday software like office and so on...

On hard drive 2 (slave configuration) I plan to install XP and only my audio software.

The question I have is:

1* I will need to update XP on hard drive 1, that is all microsoft security update patches and so on, but do I need to update XP on hard drive 2 (security update patches)? - I don't want anyone (person, trojans, worms, viruses etc. to be able to infect my clean install on drive 2).

2* Shall I update XP on drive 2?

3* Is there a way do totally cut of connection to internet while logged in by XP on hard drive 2? (will Peerguardian 2 blocking IP: 255.255.255.255 work?).

4* Any other tips?

Thx & regards to you all!

I have a similar setup. Internet and all the other garbage on drive one with XP and a simple, streamlined version of XP (all the extras turned off) on drive two. No internet on drive two either. I change the boot drive in the bios when it starts. Works fine. Got rid of about 300megs of crap loaded in the memory, compared to drive one, on the second drive. If you have good internet security on drive one, no need to worry about it on drive two. It's not connected anyway.

Would you want yet another drive for the audio? And a second thought/question; Could the 'general purpose' drive be available for audio and project file back-ups?

Just disable the network card or the modem in the second install of XP. It won't affect the first one.

This all seems like overkill where a little knowledge of the computer would go a long way.

I treat drive one as my second drive when I boot to drive two. Just like if you had a purpose built pc to use as a DAW, when you boot to frive two, drive one just sits there begging to be recorded to. The OS on that drive is nothing more than a bunch of files.

Care to elaborate?

It just seems a bit much to have two installations of the same OS. If you stop all your programs while you're working on audio stuff it's the same effect anyway and if you use a separate disk for temporary audio you've got no fragmentation to worry about.

I guess it's different if you're a techie. You don't have viruses and spyware to worry about since, well, you can spot them a mile off.

Hey, each to their own though, hope I helped.

why dont you have on drive 1
xp multiple users the one that connects to the internet set up as a user and not a administrator,(should stop alot of spyware because you have no install privaliges ) in the music user turn everything off

drive 2 use for audio

No need for security updates or virus scan on the DISK 2 XP installation. The easiest thing to do would be to just disconnect the ethernet cable when your using DISK 2 XP. Or like someone else said, you can disable the ethernet controller on that XP install.

It's just easier to reboot to a different drive already setup the way you want then have to do it every time you want to record. It would be the equivalent to having 2 puters. One for internet and other stuff and one as a DAW.

Except you can't use the other one while this one is busy doing something.

True. But it's just me and when I'm doing one, I don't have time to mess with the other.

Thx everybody for your help!

Now I have another question.
I've decided to install XP twice, once on each drive (C master, & D slave) and I now have to select which XP installation to run when I start my computer and it all works brilliant and with no errors what so ever...

But for convinience... When I start up my computer and the question what XP installation to run, the music installation comes up on top in the list and the general XP below that.
Can I some how change this so the general XP installation ends up on top of the two?
The thing is that if I don't make a selection within 30 seconds, the one in the top of the list becomes the default one that is started.. (I know that in a music forum like this, this question is like writing 666 on the wall but never the less..;)). By swithing place on them in the start-up I would know that my precious music installation is not ruind if someone starts the computer and starts messing around...

Regards to you all!

In case you didn't know, I think this requires two licenses for XP (one per installation). You may not care or already know, but I thought I'd mention it :)

Edit the file 'boot.ini' in the root of C:\ (or whichever is your master drive) and you should be able to do what you need in there. There will be a default setting (at the top of the file) and two lower down. Just change the default one to match the one you want.

Take a backup first though, just in case!

No, I don't need two lincense. My XP comes with a license that says that I can only install and use XP onto one computer and only for private use, which is just what I have done.

Is editing the boot file just a matter of copy/paste?

I think you'll find that if you read closer, the EULA wording says 'one copy per computer'. Not that I agree with it or anything...

It's just a matter of changing which is the default OS in there, no copy and paste required.

Technically it is only on one computer. In the sense that because it's on a dual boot, both installs of windows could not possibly be running at the same time.

Dual booting is a perfectly normal thing to do, and it has a myriad of advantages. Not having 2 computers, being able to have separate installs is extremely handy for keeping audio stuff separate from games/movies/internet type stuff.

It says :

Micro$oft said:
...You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a single computer,
such as a workstation, terminal or other device...

He is installing two copies. It's plain, simple and unambiguous. However these EULAs are bullshit anyway :)

It is still just one and the same computer... Never the less.. Where do I find the "boot.ini" file that you are talking about?

I got XP to search fot any *boot*.* and any *.ini file but I got no hot hits for the type of file I'm looking for..

So, anyone who knows where to find it?

It's in the root of C: like I said...

C:\boot.ini

It might be a hidden file but I don't think it is. Just go to 'start, run' then type C:\boot.ini, press ok and it should open in notepad.
