I'm setting up a sweet portable studio, but I need some killer headphones. I'll be doing most of my mixing through them, so I'm willing to spend up to $200. Someone recommended the Sennheiser HD362 to me. Anybody recommend something else. I want to have some idea before I shop around for them.

You are in luck my friend as I too have just concluded a quest for awesome headphones. Try checking out the "Headphones!!!!????" post in the mixing forum.

Good Luck

Try a pair of Beyer 250 headphones before you buy. They run around 131 at Full Compass. [Don't know the current price as I bought two sets about a year ago.

I had a session last night to do a small project and when I was setting up the studio before the client came in, I wanted to run three sets of headphones. While I had time, I plugged in a new pair of Sony phones as a third set; they sound pretty good but not as good as the Beyer. Then, I plugged in a very old pair of AKG 880 phones; they were 50 per cent less efficient that the Beyer or Sony phones. Try before you buy.

Sony MDR7506

They cost less than a hundred bucks.

They're so incredible that they'll make you want to re-listen to every cd in your entire collection, to hear everything you've missed before.

AGC K280s are great but as someone suggested they need a lot of juice to run.

Fostex (I can't think of the model) makes a decent one for under $100 cdn.

Would it be a waste of time to use a good set of phones in place of studio monitors?

Not a waste of time. But surely a greater challenge.
Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

mothertest,
I got a pair of Audio technica ATH-M40's that I really can't complain about at all. There are mail catalogs that you can pick em up for about $70. just annother consideration.

I just got 2 pair of Sennheiser HD500 phones ($130/ea at Circuit City).
They sound very nice. I still like AKG K270S the best, though (but those are something like $230 or something). For sure, though, these Sennheisers are the most comfortable headphones I've had on my head.
I thought they were a little bass-heavy at first, but now I'm used to them a little more and they sound real good.

Nothing quite like coughin up a good $7000 for a nice pair of Stax electrostatic headphones. Worth every penny I tell ya. $7000. Thats right. I know you're fighting the urge to buy em right now. Oh, plus you'll need a special polarized high voltage amp to make your new headphones operable, so that'll probably set ya back another few grand.

Hey,

Radio Shack sells Koss phones with their name on it. The are very efficiant, sound very good, and are very cheap. Go give them a try.

The combination of Koss and Radio Shack in one quality piece of equipment is just too much to resist.

Cant...control...urge...to...buy...

Hey King,

Get a good pair of koss phones, take them home, and compare them with the Stax, It's the only way to be sure.

The Koss phones at Radio Shack, have Koss written on the plug, so you will know. The ones I like are the nova 67's. They are the best phones I have heard, and they are around thirty bucks.

I would buy the Stax to do the test, but I had to have the water pump replaced in my Roll Royce, and am a little short of cash.

This could be a very interesting comparison, give it a try and let us know!!!
