I'm looking for a sub-$120 or so instrument mic...can anyone help me out? I'm looking forward to record violins and some ethnic instruments. the mic will be fed to my motu 828mkii...

Do a search for MSH mics. Lots of buzz here about how great they are. Click the link in my sig and it'll take you to the site and you can dowload a violin clip.

Actually, in the process of some site restructuring and the clip links are down :( Check back on Sunday, I will be done by Sunday night with some fun new goodies :)

You might consider an MXL 604 SDC. I use a single or x/y pair on a classical guitar with good results. My duet partner finds the 604 to be too bright on his steel string acoustic and opts for an old CAD E1000, or an SM57 instead.

I run them all ithrough a Behringer Xenyx 1204fx, to an Edirol 101 fronting Adobe Audition. Works fine for me.

Have you tried eqing out some of the brightness of the 604's? I'm just wondering if it can be tamed a bit. Harvey Gerst mentioned that the omni caps are'nt as bright (I think it was Harvey). My memory sucks lately.

I really didn't try to eq out the brightness. I bought the 604s because I wanted the brightness and the fact that the bass rolloff took out some of the boominess inherent with a nylon string guitar. We only tried the 604 with the steel string for a few minutes.

In all fairness this should not be taken as a real test of the 604 on a steel string guitar, as this guitar is a highbred instrument with 28 strings and a stainless steel fretboard. The tone on this guy is really sharp to begin with anyway, kind of half steel guitar, half sitar.

I have a Taylor and a Martin guitar, but I've only had the 604s for less than a month and haven't tried them on either

So far I've been more than happy with the 604 on the classicals, though.

Audio Technica Pro 37

Hi,

My Pro 37 is great on my acoustic guitar. It's right in your price range about $130 new. Used for under $100.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

The 603/604 cardioid capsules have a small 7 KHz peak that is pretty narrow. The omni capsules don't have that peak.

do you want new or used? If you're ok with used, get a adk hamburg or vienna. I've gotten one used for 150, and another for 180. Wonderful mics. Although I do always find myself boosting high freqs when I use the mics.

i found myself doing the same thing (hi boost). i'd imagine that the vienna would be just right.

How's the AT2020? and also the SM57?

I like the 2020 for cello. Not sure how it would do on violin. IMHO, it also works well in a M/S pair with a SP B3 in figure-8 mode. I recorded bongos that way once for fun. :)

The 2020 is a... MDC, I guess. Medium diameter. It's 16mm. It's fairly neutral, with fairly flat response. The larger capsule tames transients a bit compared to a typical SDC, but retains exceptional HF detail. At $75, it is a great addition to any mic cabinet, IMHO. (Mine was free. Even better. :D)

As for the SM57....

Everhy once in a while Guitar Center offers a deal on the Octava MC012's. If you are willing to sit down at the store and audition a box full of them, you can usually find a couple that are decent.
