Hi I'm new. I was wondering which software package I should go with?
I have a vista PC 64-bit 4gig ram intel(R) core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.40GHz 2.40GHz

I have been looking at sonar but wont run on 64-bit unless I get the 8.5 but they don't seem to sell that I also was looking at The PreSonus FireBox it seems to be the best for starting out. I also have looked at pro tools but again won't run on 64-bit.

Any advice for how to start oh ya I want to be able to record vocals and guitar. Thanks for any input.

Im in the process of getting ableton live intro which is 99 bucks and comes with 7 gigs of diffrent samples and instruments and stuff. and if yur starting out like me then from what ive read it should be pretty simple

I'm a Sonar 8.5 user, and am very happy, but I've been a Sonar user for a long time. Based on my experience and that of friends, I can recommend these commercial DAW's:

Sonar
Cubase
Samplitude
Pro Tools LE*
Pro Tools M-Powered**
SAWStudio

* - must have Digidesign LE hardware
** - must have M-Audio hardware

You'll get excellent results out of any one of these - just make sure they support Vista 64 bit before you buy. You don't need to buy the top of the line on any of these, either - the lower priced versions sound just as good. The benefit of higher priced versions is usually more extras and higher maximum track counts.

how can i get sonar 8.5 cause it says you have to own sonor 8 to buy 8.5 but sonor 8 won't run on vista 64.

also I was wondering if cubase is the same as PreSonus Studio One Artist you see ive been looking at getting the PreSonus fire box and Studio One Artist comes with it is this a good program can you tell me anything about it?

Cubase & StudioOne are not the same thing. One thing about StudioOne Artist that you need to be aware of is that you can't run 3rd party VST plugins on it. You can only use what comes bundled with StudioOne. I've been interested in StudioOne, but have been turned off by that. However, you can use 3rd party VST with StudioOne Pro. And man it looks sweet!! :)

what does (third party VST plugins)mean, and why would I need this?

VST plugins are things like eq, compression, reverbs, delays, etc. Let's say that you have a vocal track that you want to add some reverb to. You would add that reverb by opening up a reverb plugin on that track. You can use that same plugin on as many tracks as you want (or until your processor craps out).

Most DAW software comes with there own plugins. These could be VST, RTAS, AU, etc. Third party plugins are one's made by other companies. Waves is popular one. Waves has plugins that you can buy to use in your in your DAW. StudioOne Artist will not allow you to use 3rd Party Plugins. It's just one of their restrictions. They want you to buy the Pro version, you know.
