Hi, i've got a pretty big recording this Saturday as it will be handed in as my Uni assessment. I'm recording my band. Quite rocky. Anyway, iv been trying to read up as much as possible for micing up drums. I'm worried that i wont be able to do it right. The uni supplies mics, good ones i think, but i need help on which ones to use and where. What i have available is:

Neumann KM184 Mics
Neumann KM140 Mics
AKG 414 Mics
AKG D12e (Bass Drum)

I think there are two or three mics in each set. Im probably going to have to invest in some mic stands as i think they only supply one. But which one should i use where?

Thanks

If it were me KM184s overheads. I prefer small dia. condensers over large on overheads. ( in XY stereo) 140s drum mics, 414s omni room mics (if the room sounds ok).I would see if they have any dynamics to use on drums though. A good stick whack could be pretty devastating to a condenser mic.

I see you can use the KM100 series as a ms stereo pair (1 fig 8 capsule ,the 20 I think, 1 cardioid capsule). You could also do it with a 414 (fig 8)and a km184 (cardioid).

But, since you have them, try them all, see what works best.

Thanks. Couple more questions: What kind of mic are all these? ie are the KM184s condensers? dynamic? I really don't know much about mics yet.

What do you mean by dynamics for the drums? Something the sound will pass thru before reaching the computer?

Sorry i don't understand. Will some of these mics be figure 8's? And what do you mena by using them as a stereo pair?

Sorry for all this, but im, just trying to learn :o
