I know, I know... this question has been asked before. ...I just figured I would pose it again because Im in the market for a pre-amp now and could use the advice and recommendations of all of you smart folks out there.
I need a good tube preamp for under $350.00. I want to use it for typical home studio applications (acoustic guitar, vocals, etc.). I am currently using a tascam 788 and could use a good tube pre amp to warm things up a bit. I have heard alot of you speak of the ART mp, Presonus Blue, etc., and am wondering if any of you could share your opinions on these or any others youve tried in that price range.
I sincerely thank you in advance for any help

I use the ART dual channel mic pre; it is hooked into my MD8 system, etc. But, I've just acquired a Yam DAW2186; so, most of my outside gear will surely become extinct when I get the hang of the 2816.

The ART dual channel is pretty good for the money. Sometimes it depends on what other gear you are using, mics, etc. [even cables]

So, if you can audition a mic pre, that would be worth 10k in words.

The premium mic pre, or one of them, would be made by MartinSound, if you care to check it out. They are on the net at Martinsound.com.

:D :D :p

Simple fact: Your not gonna get a good tube pre amp for under 350.

Thanks for the help folks. What is it specifically that sways you toward the Meek preamps? Ive heard of noise problems with the ART and Presonus blue, any truth to that? And does that problem exist in the Meek line?

If you're worried about noise, I don't know if I'd run out and grab a Meek. I like their sound, but truthfully, I think the Art's are quieter.

What about Behringer Ultragain mic2200. It has the TUBE.;) and two leds behind it to make it glow...:D ..and it's under $350 for sure

if your worried about noise...buy a gate. The meek pre has vastly improved my recordings....but i have always run a gate when tracking so i haven't been concerened with noise...unless a unit is real noisy..in which case i wouldn't buy it.

 The VC6Q I have heard on several occasions is not noisy. At $350 it IS a bargain--plus it has Meek compression and eq. IMO the ART is not not not in the same class. YMMV.

Rip Rowan at ProRec.com seems to like the VC6Q, a lot: http://prorec.com/prorec/articles.nsf/files/B61E157E1DCE022F8625687A007ED5D6

I own the VC1Q, and the ART should not even be mentioned in the same sentence--even though I just did.

The VC1Q is as quiet as a mouse,
until I make it roar.:D
