i currently own an american single coil strat, while the clean sound it delivers is fricken sweet, i would also like one wiht a really nice distortion sound. I have check out many models, including the les paul imitations, while i do not have enough money for a real lespaul custom, i have looked into the epiphone, the samick, and esp models. additonally, i have found some of the other esp models to ahve a nice distortion,
i may even consider getting an american double fat strat. my money is limited, and im not sure on what to spend it on. I was really set on an ephiphone lespaul custom, but i soon found out that would be a waste of money. ive heard good things about habers, schecters, and aria's . im very confused as you can see, please help me somone....!!! =]
 
Peter heres a luthier to strongly consider he makes original instruments that have to be seen and played to be believed

You can buy a run of the mill mass produced guitar which will cost you more in the long run or you can buy something of a luthier like this and keep it for good

Well im willing to spend a little less than i spent on my stratocaster so bout anyything up to 600-700

al though ti am also considering getting a marashall stack, right now im notsure what i nered more, the new gutiar of the stack

im currently on a crate gfx212
and although my band is still really small, we will be playing a lot of shows relatively soon, within the year
 
Peter, you could always put in a big fat humbucker in the bridge position and have the best of both worlds, a lot cheaper too. I have done this a couple of times with Strats and never found a need to change the pots, the 250's work fine, and my best results have always been Di Marzio pickups.
As an alternative Di Marzio also make stacked Humbuckers the same size as a strat pickup so there is no routing of the guitar.

Check out the Tokai LP copies. I got one a few weeks ago straight from Japen for $520 (not including the case and shipping.) Its made to the same spec's and wood as LP Classics, has binding and large inlays, great build quality. Its the best deal i've found yet!

If I were you I would take my strat to the music store and try it through the Marshall to see if it gives you the sound that you are looking for. The Strat / Marshall combination is a classic setup that has been proven to work over and over again.

I don't know what type of sound you are looking for, but I do know that the Crate is sort of a limited amp, I really dislike the clean tones and the distortion is thin and only sounds good for certain styles.

hey guys thanks for all the help, i will put this all into consideration, although i am leaning towards taking away one of the single coils, and putting in a seymour duncan invader in teh bridge,
maybe put one on the neck too, how would two doubnle hums go wiht 1 single coil in the middle?
what kidn of sound would that produce?

and also about the amp, the gfx is the best i belive in its price. I mean a little under 400 bux, and its 120 watts, true the tones are really not taht good, and the effects are weak tho.
I am currently using the DOD distortion pedal, a crappy pedal, but fits my needs for now.

im wondering tho, a lot of poeple suggested a randall , or mesa double rectifier head for a nice distortion. My genre of music varies greatly, as wiht my band i play stuff thats kinda new compared to other music out there( power pop, emorock)
and by myself( i ve been taking lessons recenetly) i liek to play blues to help me become a better guitar player.

So i am not sure as of yet. I will definately think about changing my p-ups, however the stack is probably out of the question right now... As a head and cab can get into the 1-2 thousands. Im only a 15 yr old kid :(
 
Learn to love the Strat (w/three singles) through an overdriven amp, especially a Marshall.

The most glorious rock sound ever.

I'm not sure about better. Double humbuckers will give a smoother, fatter distorted tone. It's all about preferences.

What I'm saying is if you have a reasonably badass strat, and from the money you spent I would suspect you do, you can get some killer tones from the single coils. I agree with the above poster that you should wait to see what the strat sounds like with a new amp (what I believe should be a higher-priority purchase). If you still don't like your distorted tone then start looking for a new guitar.
A good strat-style guitar is the most versatile guitar you can have--not just for clean tones.
 
Two Duncan Invaders will completely overpower a regular Strat single coil p/up.

If you want the 'Super-Strat' set up, I have a custom-built guitar that has a Duncan Mag Humbucker on the bridge, a Duncan Alnico strat in the middle and a Duncan Custom at the neck. Both humbuckers have coil taps.
I can get a great Strat sound between the middle and back in single coil mode. The middle and front in single coil mode isn't so realistic, but both of the humbuckers sound great.

If you're going to go that route and the 'out of phase' Strat sound is critical, you must have a bolt on neck, or you just won't get that sound.

Having done what you're trying to do (professionally, for several years) I would recommend the Strat as is and the Marshall (if you must). It is a classic rig (if it was good enough for Jimi . . .)

If I was going to do it, however, I would go with the Strat and a Mesa Boogie. The Marshall will do one thing EXTREMELY WELL.

Boogies do everything extremely well.

One thing that I have learned over the last 41 years of playing in groups is that a good guitar thru a shit amp produces a shit sound. End of story. However a good quality amp can make a shit guitar sound a whole lot better than you would ever imagine.
You have a class guitar, look at the greats who use them, now put your money towards a QUALITY amp, as the man says Boogie do everything well, although personally I find the Fender Twin does everything for me.
Don't sell the bloody guitar, it will only go up in value over the years, if I had hung on to the 1958 strat that cost $125 in 1970 it would be worth a bundle now.

i am a strat player...to me its the coolest sounding and looking guitar. One thing I don't like is a strat with a humbucker on it...it ruins the looks of the guitar. get a samick with humbuckers or some other cheaply priced guitar and upgrade the pickups. I agree that a marshall is a one trick pony, but, so is a humbucker equiped guitar. Humbuckers don't have the hum, have a bit more output (no big deal)and they sound better on heavy distortion.
In my opinion a fender guitar with single coils blows a humbucker equiped guitar away in every other area. I have never been a big fan of the humbucker tone if its not distorted.

I have a cheap ass guitar with humbuckers on it for recording purposes if i need a really heavy distorted tone. it dosen't have to be a real good playing guitar for power chording (i wouldn't use humbuckers for a lead ride)

hendrix got some great distortion sounds out of a strat. stevie ray got some great distortion out of a strat (voodo chile s.r.). richie blackmore got some great sounds out of a strat.

althought my strat isnt all that great, (its just a plain american wiht single coils) i do like the clean sound very much, it has great range from punch, to more recessive and peacefull sounding, and i guess your right on the distortion. Right now i run my strat through a DOD distortion pedal and a gfx 212( i dont like crate distortion)

i am not sure on waht to get amp wise tho. I have heard that marhsalls produce excellent clean tones but not really good distorted ones. wtih mesa boogies, i have heard just the opposite, that it produces a killer distortion.
or course price is an issure as well. as i cannot get a good payingjob yet becuase of my age. oh well

i have heard good things about randall heads,

i was thinkin about either a marshall or randall head, wiht a behringer or marshall cab...
any opinions on these?


also waht are the differences between teh differetn neck woods?
i have only maple ones so i dont know waht rosewood and ebony sound like. is thre even a big difference?
 
fender amps

some of the best distorted sounds i have heard believe it or not come from fender amps, marshalls and mesa's are good as well but are expensive... also dod do not have the best distorition. Play some of the 2x12 fender amps, even with a single coil strat u can get some kick ass high-gain distortion sounds...

also, pretty much right about the marshall, and mesa amps... but it all matters about ur preference. Fender amps will give you that nice clean tone, and good distorted sounds... Also like with most amps (esp tube ones) u need to crank them to get a good sounds... fenders are known to get that 'cranked' sounds w/o having to turn them waaaaaay up...
 
...if you can't find a used les paul in your price range of 6-700$ let me know...I can definitely find one...I'm not bragging...for whatever reason, where I live, they can be found any day of the week in your price range or cheaper...reply if I can help...why pay 700$ for a "new" guitar when you could get a used les paul--a standard, a studio, maybe even a custom.

OH NO!!!!! I have that amp, it sucks!!! get a peavey classic 30, way better, tube, and i believe cheaper. Just a thought, if you like it, buy it though, but solid state amps aren't any good live in general.

i dunno, ive always liked the wound it produces.. I usually dotn go with peavey products, becuase my friend has had bad experiences with peavey stuff. But i definatly want to consider getting a half stack.. although im not sure which one...
either marhshalll or randall or somethjing

anyone have any suggestions?>
