A. Parker Fly - Expensive, looks like plastic, but these things can fly.
B. Telecaster - Some of these have AMAZING distorted AND clean sounds. Theres one i found for 850 new that was amazing. Versatility at its best.
C. Paul Reed Smith - Some people complain that they don't have much character, but they diliver a beautiful dark sound, which is what i like.
D. I was really lucky, i'm not huge into Ibanez, but when i baught my first guitar, I was already a tone freak. I tried out the S470, and its extremely awsome. The neck pickup sounded bluesy when you turn the tone control the slighest bit from the high end (near the high end but a bit further away). Dig in and you got blues (wth? Ibanez that plays blues?)...better believe it sounds 10 times better than my friend's strat. I play that same pickup distorted and it rocks.

If all of this doesn't quite satisfy you still, then try new pickups on your already new guitar.. The L500 by Bill Lawrence pickups....most amazing distorted sound i've ever heard. Eric Johnson uses Lawrence single coils. These things have no excess noise, and they did wonders for my friend's guitar. Because I have 500 k pots, I have to order the XL500, and it should be here in the next few days. If you call Bill Lawrence, this guy is amazingly brilliant with guitars, and will recommend you to whatever you tell him that you want for your guitar. Whatever kind of sound, he will give you it with the pickups. These things are extremely cheap too.

Sorry to ramble on these...but if you don't believe me, check out the reviews www.harmonycentral.com . Go to reviews, pickups, Bill Lawrence or maybe its Lawrence. All of the reviews are 9's and 10's.....amazing.

ARRRGH (again)! Don't confuse the guy!

He already has a good axe and a lot of the axes you mentioned are out of his price range. The problem is he's playing through a Crate GFX212. The next step in getting a good rig is to upgrade his amp.

Did ya even read any of the thread aside from his initial post?

hahahha thankjs lop
i guess my guitar right now isnt too bad
it dosent get the more modern sound i am looking for right now tho.

i went to guitar center yesterday and i saw some pickups, the best that realllly fit me now are the hot rails start replacemtn pickups, would one in the bride position wiht the rest of the pickuips sound ok?

i saw a killer retired crate blue vodoo model there as well for 300 bux
its the 60h series, i am seriously considering that one...
for that and another 300 bux for alike 700 wiht the tax and stuff i could get a pretty killer setup

im scared to try and put in the pickup tho, ive never done this before and it looks hard. i dotn want to mess up my axe! :)

oh well , i feel like so many people know so much more than i do, so i feel like an idiot

? new axe

Peter, I feel your pain. I tend to side a little w/ lopp. Although I don't play strats, it seems like an American strat is just fine for the sound you say you want. Also your Crate is far from ideal for any sound you want. You can't afford a Mesa Boogie right now, but that seems to be an amp to die for in general. Your preamp/FX situation seems to me nonexistent. Consider just buying a good multi-FX processor, say Line 6 POD. Not only will it allow you to tweak your sound, but when you get that killer amp you want, the POD will still be useful. I would say to aquire the best stuff you can afford now, rather than accepting "it'll just have to do" . When you can afford the amp you really want, then buy it. No, a box like POD will not allow you to get tube out of solid state, but it's a good pre that will improve your overall sound, and I'll bet when you have kissed that Crate goodbye, it'll still be part of your setup. Keep asking questions, you're doing the right thing- Richie

thanks richie...
right now im just concentrating on getting a job, becuase ive pretty much set mysefl towards the crate 60 h blue vodoo( a used one) that i saw at GC for 300 something bux

im just deciding on cabinets right now, would a crate cab go the best wiht it cuz they are the same company or does that not even matter.

when it comes to cabs; there's the marshall and the mesa again really... anyway both are VERY good, you can pick you speakers, for 60 watts i would suggest a 2x12" or 4x12" with vintage 30's by celestion... almost eve4ryone agrees these sound great.

and cabs are plenty second hand.. everyone needs one... ;)

Guhlenn

ps Lopp, i know i was regurgerating you ... and i too like the way i think... :P:D:D

would the 60 watts be loud enough? i mean wiht my crate gfx 212 i use now its about always on 7 just to hear myself over the drummer.. and tahs 120 watts

also would any of you agree that this is a good c hoice?

Oh yea just pickedup a hot rails pikcup for only 30 bux... so ill bwe putting that in soon.. but gay guitar center is charging 30 bux...

A couple of points.

- Amp power is not linear. Thus, 120 Watts will not give you double the volume of 60 W. A 60 W amp should be enough power to overcome a drummer given you read the paragraph below.

- Try elevating your amp or angling it upwards. One of the biggest problems guitarists have is that their amps are on the floor with the speakers pointed at their legs. They can't hear crap, so they crank their amp. Setting the speaker on a chair with it angled towards your ears usually solves the problem.

I can't comment on the Crate. I know they make some crap, which doesn't mean they don't make good stuff.

You can check user comments of amps at:

Congrats on the hot rails. You might want to have a tech install it if you are not confident in your abilities.

Regarding your earlier post, I wouldn't say your an idiot. ;) You're actually pretty smart in trying to do your research before making an important purchase.

guhlenn, just don't regurgitate on my shoes.

hahah thanks for being so supportive,. i jsut done wnat to make the smae mistake again. i was caught in the fender craze last usmmer and i didnt no smack bout guitars so i bough an american standard strat ( when i really needed humbuckers)
and a crate gfx 212( also crap)

now form this forum i know that strats are way too overpriced and that i should always consult an unbiased party before making such a big purchase

thanksf or all the help giuys!

Also Peter...

a 60 watt tube amp will smoke your ss anyday. It simply produces more volume... so 60 watts of tube will be fine. When you want to stick to ss, keep the 120 watt crate... you'll need. There's a big difference...

anyway save up for the amp, and wqhen you have it save up for the cab and when you have it save up for a humbucking guitar and when you have it save upo ....

well at least with me this list is never ending...;)

Good luck!
Guhlenn:)

hah i guess my always wanting somehtin new is my weakness but oh so much fuN!

Posting to a thread without reading the thread.

Kinda like volunteering information halfway into a conversation without knowing where the conversation's been.

Pete needs an new amp, not a new axe! (I wish we could change the title of this thread). ;)
