Ok
I'm still in the process of reading a few books and talking to a few people about Outgear. I just recently bought the ART PRO VLA 2 Channel Tube Compressor/ limiter and it sounds great. The bad part is, that I had to buy it just to hear it! Right now that's our only outgear signal processor. The majority of our production and processing is done internally using WAVES Diamond Bundle Plugins and Wavelab; we use alot of VST plugins and we are satisfied with the FX processing within the interface. When we do a recording that's not internal, the instruments that range or that we have the "ability" to record is guitars, keyboards, vocals, bass, and later on accoustic instruments (tambals, tambarines ect.). We dont have the space to record live drums at the moment.
I know a good thing to do might either be:
1) To rought the entire mix through a series of outgear signal processors for an even fuller mix depending on the desired effect (warm, punchy, ect).
2) To rought each channel recording through the processors of choice to get a different sound; different sounding compression ect ect. then use method 1.
I have 3 questions:
1) In the situation of hearing a compressor, how might I be able to find examples of "such and such" compressor in action? Like right now, I wouldn't be able to know that there is a big difference in the way a DBX 266xl sounds from an Eurika PreSonus Recording Channel. The only thing that I can "some what" go by is the gear stats which is not enough for my ears lol.
2) Compression characterists. Exactly what should I be listening for so I can get a general understanding that this is how this compressor sounds in comparison to this other compressor?
3) Mixer/Mixing. The Onyx 1220 Mixer that I'm using has 2 AUX channels in/out and 4 channel inserts. The bad part is, all that is post computer so I cant use the Auxiliry's or the Inserts unless I rought those specific channels (AUX and Insert) to a channel strip. So I'd be able to use my Art Pro or any other processor on an auxiliry channels just as long as I'm recording on Channel 12 and not channels 1 - 11. This takes away my multi tracking ability, but if I wanted to do a multi track session and process them, I guess I can rought each recorded channel to the signal processor, then loop back into the DAW individually. Consider the fact that there is only 2 Aux channels, if I get more processors in the future, could I just stack them on top of each other instead of roughting them individually and then the last processor roughts to the channel? Is this practical?
As far as future investments for the studio, this is my outlook after system upgrades:
Waves APA44
TC Electronics Finalizer 96k
This isn't official but just some things I'm keeping in mind.
Much help needed. Educate me plz
