Ok Guys, after a long absence and some heavy personal problems .
I 'm back to bother you guys. ( Especially Mr. Ghost)
I never actually tried out my 488 months ago because of things beyond my control.

My main goal is to record country blues. Slide resonator guitar. Regular acoustic. A little harp and some other things like stomp box and tambourine.
Think of it pretty much as an acoustic session.

Months ago I bought a marshal condensor mike. Not too expensive.
About $100
I also have a shure SM57.

So today I realized I just have a 488, not a 488MKII.
So I believe I do NOT have phantom power . ( which is why my condensor mic is silent (LOL).

Anyway could use your suggestions. It seams like when I plug my sm57 directly into the deck, I get a lot of noise and not a lot of volume out of the guitar. Could be crappy cords I guess, but the guitar comes through very quiet. I use an adaptor because the inputs on the deck are all 1/4"
And of course the marshall condeseor mic is silent. My fault. Thought I had phantom power. So , can I power that mic?
Or am I thinking of this wrong.

If you guys had the same deck...these same two mic's ...how would you approach without buying a lot of additional gear.
I believe in a past post , someone said there is outboard phantom power supplies.
Sounds like that would work for me, but will I get some volume?
I have to practically shove the SM57 right on the strings and then turn the input all the wa y up just to get a marginal signal.

Anyway, hope all is well with everyone.
Would appreciate any thoughts you guys have.
Mike

I think you should check your cables.

The SM57 should give a decent signal if close to the instrument and turned all the way up.

The Marshall mic needs phantom power, and there are a variety of outboard phantom power supplies available,... Rolls comes to mind immediately. This type of accessory should be a low cost item, appx. $30, or so.

I have one of the ART models, They make two, one is for just one mic and the one I have is for two mics. It runs off of two 9 volt bats or can use an adapter to plug it into the wall, But that is not included.

I use an adaptor because the inputs on the deck are all 1/4"
Is this adaptor an IMPEDENCE MATCHING adaptor? I assume it is from XLR to 1/4", however, I have seen some adaptors with NO transformer within. The SM-57 is a LOW IMPEDENCE mic and it sounds like the 488 has 1/4" HIGH IMPEDENCE inputs as this is a budget recorder and most budget stuff has High impedence inputs as they do not have to include a transformer. That is why you need an impedence matching adaptor as they DO have the transformer to CHANGE the LO impedence to HIGH. I could be wrong, but that sounds like what is happening. Of course, it has been years since I have delt with hi z stuff, and I may be a victim of alzhiemers. :D

Thanks guys.
Thats a really good start.

I'll look on-line and backposts for the phantom power source.

Would radio shack carry something like that?
I might even check the guitar center here. They have a pretty decent recording department. But just a bunch of kids running it.

Got a phantom power supply at Guitar center.
Also picked up some better cables, and it solved the noise problem.

Now the problem is it very clearly recorded my playing (LOL)
Man I suck !!!

I think I have some of my deck figured out.
manuals can be hard for me. I tend to reverse stuff that I read sometimes.

I got a good single recording on track #1.
Then listened through the phones to track one while I played for track #2.
I could hear both coming through the phones which was what was supposed to happen. But I actually recorded both onto track #2 just as they were coming through the phones.

I'll get it...just have to spend more time
