Need a few microphones for a very different purpose

Something like a boundary mic (aka PZM) might be appropriate here. They are often used for conference calls and so on, and are designed to pick up from all over.

The model that I know first hand is the Shure SM91, but at £200 is not a cheap option. Perhaps some of the other members have first hand experience with the less expensive boundary mics? There are plenty out there.

I am not sure if they are still available from Radio Shack, but I would think that the best type of mic to use for his purpose would be a PZM type mic (also known as a Boundary Mic). The units from Radio Shack were relatively cheap.

If you are not familiar with them, they require being placed on a solid surface (preferably a smooth and shiny one such as a coffee table) and not one that is cloth covered. Stuck on a wall often works very well and if they have a surrounding surface of at least 3ft x 3ft even better. In fact, if held in the hand or placed on (or taped to) a mic stand or similar, generally you will pick up very little.

They are often used on the floor at the front of a stage in live theatre to pick up all the sound coming from the stage.

Unless you have a mixer with phantom volts, be sure that you do not buy one that requires this type of voltage. The Radio Shack units were battery driven and Crown manufacture one (mainly for camera work) that is dynamic and therefore requires no voltage.

hope this helps a bit.
