I still have a few rolls of Mogami wire I bought at an auction when they closed down the Mars...Im thinking of just taking the cheap cables just putting the ends on the mogami...and then use the cheaper cables for the headphones.

Get a C1 Studio Projects. Use the 75 roll off.......you won't even need to EQ it. Plus it's super cheap!!! They sound GREAT

Yes the SP C1 can sound quite excellent but...

If you're a speaker or singer with bright upper harmonics (like me), it's too bright and essy-
unless you want to tinker with a de-esser. Better to try the C1 out personally.
Not a knock on it, there are other great VO mics like a Beyer M88 that don't work as well
without significant de-essing.

BTW for just a bit more you could move up to the "safer" SP CS series, which would sound
first rate on more of a variety of voices IMHO.

I have to echo the Shure SM7 suggestion. It's a great mic for that kind of work.

But if you're interested in a USB mic and a smaller budget, try the Blue Snowball. I've used it successfully for several projects and was happy with the results.

Good luck!

The SM7 doesn't really exist over here but I've had lots of good experience with the EV RE-20, which is basically the equivalent product from another company. Never heard a bad word said against either.

This has turned into a cracking thread, especially as JPF has taken the superb advice on board so willingly. JPF, you'd be surprised how often these guys are found explaining why you can't get a professional recording for sixty bucks to poor sods who get themselves all defensive when they find out they can't have the world for nowt.

If you bump into Whyseye on these forums, she's a professional VO engineer and would definitely have tips that'd help someone starting out with spoken-word recordings. :)

That said, if you don't HAVE to have professional results, there are cheaper options. I keep hearing great things about the Heil PR-40 (I think) that is similar to these mics but a touch cheaper. And I've always been a big fan of the Studio Projects B1 condenser.

Id think if it is for radio...it would have to be professional sounding...you cant have your ads standing out as sounding inferior to others playing before and after them...now can we.

he can get away with the SM58 and the line6 UX2 set on the Avalon 737 model....but that being said...you cant start a production company on a budget of $200.
