I have just put together a small computer based recording studio. I have a Pentium 3 with 256mb and a 60 gig HDrive. It is'nt the latest and greatest but it has been set up with a Soundblaster Audigy SCard specifically for recording and mixing only. I have loaded both SonarXL and Reasons 2.5 on to it. I have a Windows XP OS onboard as well.
I have a casio 1200WK keyboard (a 76 key casio GM workstation which is a lot better than the name would imply) and numerous Guitars, acoutic & electric and selection of flutes as well. I've got a Zoom guitar effects and amp modeller for my electric effects run through a small studio amp (Great sound). I have a good quality Dynamic mic and full boom stand as well.
I'm a total novice to the digital world, I took a digital recording course but it was a "watch me as I mix things on my $50,000 Yamaha mixing board and into my Mac 5gig processer and work in Emajic onto my two 24" flat screens". I learned a lot theory wise but practically nothing to help with my low end home system.
One question - I have triied to set up my Sonar to recorded an audio based input ie guitar, But each time I can hear it fine through my soundcard (headphones) but when I hit record I hear and record silence.
Also on the Tutorials ie Tut.1 I have triied and triied to follow the instruction to set it up for audio output but when I play the Tutorial I hear nothing.
I'm seriously thinking of getting a local music/tech buff to come in and set me up on Midi because I also am a total ignoramous when it come to getting my keyboard (I'm no keyboardest) to interact with my computer also.
Is there anyone who would like to help out a modest recording studio novice struggle through these beginning pain. I could obviously use all the help I can get!!!

Thanks in Advance

hey,
welcome to the board.

first off, your setup sounds decent. a bit old but decent still. i think the biggest weakness is your sound blaster soundcard, but it can work for now.

explain how you are goign about recording something. say, for example, an electric guitar. do you have a guitar amp mic'ed? is this mic going right into the sound blaster card?

if this is the case, youneed to get yourself a preamp. you probably know that already though, i just mention it becuase i didn't see it in your list of gear.

so sonar XL recognize your soundcard? can you hear anything at all out of sonar when you load it? if so, did you set the correct inputs and outputs on the track that you are trying to record on in sonar? did you arm it?

I use Sonar and Reason too! I am learning the Sonar thing, but was able to hook everything up myself, with the help of some people here! Explain what is plugged into what, it will better explain what may be wrong! You can IM me if you like.............
