Nearfields........How far away before they aren't nearfields anymore?

Is there an average distance to position nearfields to obtain optimum performance.

Any ideas on what is considered too close or too far away?

Seems like I read somewhere about setting them up as a "triangle." The distance from your listening position to the monitors should be the same as the distance between the monitors or something like that. I would think at some point excess distance between monitors would affect the stereo field adversely thus limiting the maximum distance between your listening position and the monitors.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard the "triangle" thing too and use it.

What I am trying to figure out is how large can you make that triangle. I know there are numerous factors which could influence things, but there must be a limit to how far away nearfields should be positioned.

traditionally near fields are placed over the meter bridge of a console so the speakers are in front of the rear of the console, therefore no reflections = confusions within the area behind the console. The distance I suppose is determined by the depth of the console.

On the other hand if you move the speakers back from there, they become mid-fields which are really free standing speakers on stands.
