I've searched the archives high and low for threas about this topic and I found many. The best way for me to view this is through a poll. I read so many opinions that I'm nowhere closer thn I was before to buying new monitors. I understand that it's all subjective but just humor me!! :D

Please vote and if you want, please post your thoughts on why you voted the way you did.

Yamaha NS10-M's

Why, Cause i'm used to them..... If you can make it sound good on them...... It will rock anywhere.........Ok, Thats a real bad blanket statement but you know what I mean........

I love them.. .....

My Second Fav's are the YSM1's.. But they make the stuff sound too "nice"... I like the NS10's cause they are harsh and very unflattering to your mix... (we need that)

Good luck!

Joe

I love my Mackie HR824s. Why? Well, they have the best bass response of any nearfield I tried, and though they do not sound as good as the Genelecs, they cost half as much. The bass response is very important to me, because I prefer to mix through mains, because I can hear more detail that way. I would mix on nearfields, but track with the mains. I no longer have mains, so everything has to be done on my Mackies, and the bass response is a huge help. I used to use NS-10s, but towards the end of the time I was using them, I would end up going through 1000-1500mg of Advil during a long mix session, just from the headaches I would get. This is not good for your stomach, but it also affects your ability to hear. I have not had this problem since I switched to my Mackies. I would have to say that the best thing about my Mackies is the fact that, now that I have them, I will never have to listen to NS-10s again. Thank god.

Rushfan, whatever you do, DON'T get the Alesis monitors. They're just hyped hi-fi speakers that lack a lot of mids.
I got the SP-8B's and I'm very pleased with them. You should to, especially if you US guys can find them for $299! I mean, get them (or the Yorkvilles according to many, like Ozraves and Kevsmusic) and save up for some big ass monitors in the future (Mackie HR824, ADAM's P11a, Dynaudio BM15A...)

So far, I'm leaning towards the Yorkvilles. Are they really only $145 each? That seems very reasonable. Almost too reasonable!

Alesis is out!

Mackie's are too much!

I can't find the NS10's except for Ebay but all of them are scary because of things wrong with then or they're over seas!

I've never even heard of all the others! That's a lot of research for me right now.... any links to those?

Thanks,

RF

and it goes...
yorkville ysmip - Event 20/20 BAS - Mackie hr824 - Genelecs - sky

those are the ones i would consider, in that order of quality and price, depending on what you can afford. all excellent and you shouldn't feel bad about not being able to afford the next step up, because they're all great. But, what it comes down to is listening, and what you like. You have to live with your descision, and listen to them everyday. I've heard good thing abou those studiophile sb8, or whatever the model is, i think they're made by Maudio. Just test them out.

Oh, and i'd buy active monitors if i were you, unless you already have a decent amp.

Bruce, the lighting sorta wasn't there on your site - the outer speakers in the pix look like they have KRK tweets, but I don't recognize the rest of the box - Was your recommendation based on listening, is that just an old pic, or what? I have 5 of the KROK's, 2 of them for about 3 years, and so far I really like them but can't help thinking that actives with 24 dB XO's would be cleaner than passive XO's, at least for a mixing choice in stereo until I could afford 3 more - What's your current monitor setup and howzit workin' for you?

Hey BUB...... get your own forum going, I'm trying to run a poll here!!! :D (Totally kidding!)

Blue Bear- How are the V6's compared to the Rokits? I'd rather not get a "budget" monitor package if I can avoid it but I'm also confined as far as space goes. How much less are the V6's? I couldn't find then a Musician's Friend.

Barefoot- Nice speaker designs you got there! I bet they sound
nice too!?

Thanks,
RF

Ah.... I found the V6's!
A bit more expensive but worth a look!

Thanks,
RF

Thanks RF. The Kevlar woofer I used in those designs is very similar to the one used in the V8. However, the tweeter I used is much better. And the cabinets… well I’m very proud of them… they combine extremely good acoustic and damping properties while still lending themselves to simple manufacturing processes.

My newest designs leave even these ones in the dust.:)

do you charge a lot for your speakers? even to your message board buddies:)?

In fact these days, since speaker building is just a spare time gig, I’ve been building things for little more than cost - to keep up my skills, to afford me the components needed to develop new designs, and mostly just for the fun of it. So, lately my speakers are quite a bargain. Though the average home recor might choke at the cost. "A lot" of money is all relative.

I’m not interested in developing inexpensive speakers to sell to the masses. It takes a great deal of capital to start a viable business like that anyway. Pushing the limits of performance is what I’m into, and that translates to a minimum threshold in cost. At about $1000+ I can start to do something unique, world class performance, and most importantly… interesting to me. Development costs? Well, I’m hoping that my efforts there will be rewarded soon, once I’m able to squirm out from under the corporate thumb and start my own audio business again.:)

FWIW, I use the original Monitor One's with the RA-100. I'm not impressed with it's lack of flatness. You could do better for the price.

That's the same setup I have(had.... I sold it on Ebay). Now I have nothing which is why I started this thread. I'm trying to get rid of all the Alesis rack stuff. I'm going to replace it all with higher end products.

I never really liked the Alesis setup either but when I bought it, it was all I could afford and it was better than my home speakers. My friend bought the 20/20 passives and he loves them. I'm either going with the 20/20's, the Yorkvilles or the V4's. I don;t need them right away so i'll put some cash away and get what I want.

I (by the way of this poll) have concluded that the Rokit's are probably not the way to go!! :D

After a long and tedious search for the "perfect monitors", I've narrowed it down to either the V6's or the Mackies.
