Nasty Compressors?

yep-- i've only had this for about 24 hours, but it's become clear that you could distort and nastify just about anything with it :D

ooohhhh that's very pretty kojdogg!
Did it cost you an arm and a leg or just the arm? ;)
can we hear it? if it ain't too much trouble that is....

Love that color - it's the same exact shade I used for my band website! :D

I'll be on the lookout for that Alesis unit. In the meantime I gotta prevent my losing that MXR auction

action is $675, which is a lot cheaper than an api 500 compressor, buzz audio 500 compressor/limiter, or some of the other companies making 500 series compressor modules.
i have a cold/sinus infection, so i won't be posting an of the vocal tests i've done so far :) and i'm far from a great singer when fit anyway. i'll try to get something posted when i'm not embarrased by the performance.
i just tried singing through a soundstar mkII into the a-designs p-1, then into the purple action set to just get the peaks and then into the opto limiter in my langevin dvc and it sounds awesome though (cold effects aside :o). i'm going to try it with my kiwi and philgood mic in a minute :D

That's awesome - don't sweat it about the singing. No offense, but the interest is in the compressor ;)

I look forward to hearing it man - very very cool of you!!!

I'll return the favor with my new purchases when they arrive.

no offense taken :D
sorry-- i don't think i can get them done today, but i will soon. i'll probably pm you and email them to you when they're ready rather than post them.
kiwi- p1- action- langevin dvc limiter sounds awesome incidentally! :D
the action is a little touchy just like my gyraf 1176 clone was-- ime you have to use it in moderation if you don't want it to be like an effect (distortion or ultra-aggressive)
i usually don't just play acoustic and sing very much, but it actually sounded good enough (even) sick that i just belted out a bunch of songs in a row! :D

no problem man. hmmmm gyraf 1176 clone, now that truly has me curious.
Don't worry if it's just acoustic guitar instead of squashed distorted drum loops, it's nice to get a general sense of the units regardless. Hugely helpful for future gear planning (yes Sonic Albert has inspired me here) :D

oh yeah man-- i forgot you have electronic skills (don't you make analog synths or something?). you should build yourself a gyraf 1176, a gyraf ssl clone and a drip la-2a.

I do repair and modification of most audio equipment but building analog synths is my main love.

Problem with this is the only way I see to order the PCBs for gyraf stuff and such is through the Prodigy Pro forum and I can't seem get signed up there for some reason (tried 4 times).

I don't have the time to mess around trying to join another forum anyway.

yeah i wasn't able to sign up there either... but you could probably get a drip opto pcb-- i've gotten in touch with that dude. i think he makes the tb4 optocell too.

I'll look into that. I think the creator of the What Compressor takes orders from his website too.

When I have time again for experimenting with circuitry I plan to continue with an interesting project of mine. It is the Opto-FET compressor idea I came up with about a year ago involving the use of FET based opto-isolators as the gain control element. These devices have a photo-sensitive field effect transistor instead of the usual CDS cell.
I have experimented with opto-FETs in some of my synthesizer work where I employed them in voltage controlled filters with great success. Using them in a compressor could possibly result in a new class of compressor effects - or be the same as a normal FET based compressor. I'll have to see once the design is fleshed out.

Anyway. Ebay people  are being retarded about bidding on the MXR Dual Limiter so I've chosen to abandon my searches there. The last one ended at almost $200. I don't need the thing that damn much.

I have managed to find another local source for a JBL/Urei 7110 though. I'm gonna meet the person tomorrow morning to have a look at the unit. If I am satisfied with it I'll add it to the arsenal. I must say, looking at the schematics for this compressor, it is nicely designed. Very good output stage on it too. And, it's already got the provision for adding an OPT - this I like! :D

a lot of people love the 7110. i think it was sold under a different "la" designation too. there are some that had output transformers and some w/o iirc.

Yes I have heard it referred to as a real wife-beater :D

Peeking at the manual...
http://www.jblproservice.com/navigation/Vintage%20JBL-UREI%20Electronics.html
it says the transformer was optional for special order.
I have seen pics of the inside of one and there is a nice clearly marked location on the PCB for this trafo. The manual indicates which jumpers to cut and everything to install the unit.
Seeing as it is just a typical 2:1 line type I'm sure I can use a wide variety of OPTs in this application and not just the Jensen model they offered.

Actually, those Dual Limiters are kinda hot items. I'm not surprised it got bid up. A couple years ago a guy on GS offered up three for sale at @$150 each and they were gone in minutes.

Right, they get bid up because not much does what the MXR dual limiter does. It has it's own sound, and some people are willing to pay for that sound. Also, any time you get into scarcity with older gear it costs more. Those JBL units aren't particularly cheap these days either!

didn't read the entire thread but the Black Finger from EHX compresses and also destroys signals if wanted.

So I'm noticing. The bidding wars are rather intense

Very true. I'm seeing these go near $300 lately. Given the choice of spending $200 on the MXR or the JBL I think I'll have to choose the JBL. The reasons are probably obvious to you Sonic Albert but there is another aspect I'm thinking of as well. I'm not entirely sure yet - lets call it a hunch, but I think the dual limiter uses the same circuitry found in the MXR Limiter stomp box. If I don't get beat out on the stomp box I will confirm if this is the case when it's in my hands.

hmmmm very interesting. I was told the same thing about the Soul Preacher. I need to get off my butt and try these EHX products out over at the store...
I'm very curious now :D

Just a little update - picked up the 7110 this afternoon. Looks good and clean. Unfortunately I haven't tried it out yet. I am waiting for my wife to go out so I can sneak it into my rack... :D:D:D

This means my microlimiter might be useful for something!

If it isn't I'll buy it from you. :D

My Triple-C arrived today - broken!
The packing was crap, and apparently some postal worker decided to try making a field-goal with it. The rack ear on the right side is snapped off.
Seems to be working alright though. Lets see if the shipping insurance was worth a damn now...

Finally tested the JBL/Urei 7110 and guess what? It really does live up to the hype. Exceeded my expectations and will work well for my application. Pretty happy with this box! :D

I decided not to attempt bidding on the MXR Limiter stomp. Would you believe it went for close to $250?

Nevermind!
