Hey all, I've narrowed down my choices for a new condenser mic(s). I currently own some SM57s, SM58s, Beta 52, and just this morning I ordered the Studio Projects B-1 since I've read enough threads to have the impression that it's a solid, inexpensive workhorse (I picked this over the MXL 990 BTW).

I still have some money left in my budget though, I would like to buy one, or perhaps even two more microphones for a little more variety, and since I need overheads anyway. I plan on using for overheads, guitar amplification, and some vocals. I was looking at the following:

Oktava MC-012
Audio Technica 3035 (I read this is fabulous for warm, reverb-y guitar)

Which would you recommend for my needs, and for versatility? I know that for the price of one AT3035, I could probably get two MC-012s. I've allocated enough to allow for the purchase of both mics though, if you think that is a good idea. So what would you recommend? Was buying the B-1 a mistake at all? I could always return it if you think the MC-012 and AT3035 will do everything the B-1 can, plus some.

FWIW I'm only just beginning my recording setup, and my mic preamp is a Digidesign MBox -> G4 Powerbook. Thanks so much guys!

MC-012's are a solid purchase. Go for it.

Ditto. Go for a pair of SDs to round out your mics. You might consider the SP C4s. A bit more $300+, but they each have a cardiod and omni capsule. Very nice mics for the price.

The MBox preamps are OK, and should work well for you. Eventually, when funds permit, you might look into upgrading the pres. No hurry though.

Yes, get a SD condersor pair to go with the LD condenser. Also consider the MXL 603 or SP C4. The B1 will not be a mistake.

ditto, i recently added mk012's and bought another pair a week later..they are great to have around. I also have a 3035 and like that too, but you can add tha later, or get a C1 or something

I have tried the b-1 here at work in the past, and hated it. Today I tried the C-1. I wasn't much impressed with that either. I've owned Octava's before and had a good experience with them. For a good mid priced mic I would scope out a good RODE mic for just about anything. I like the NTK for vocals and the NT-5's are great on instruments. I use an Audix CX101 for voice work on radio. I have had some people tell me that the B-1 and C-1 are incredible and I just don't hear it. Must be my ears. ???

Thanks guys, a friend of mine recommended I just buy another B-1 to have a pair of those to use as overheads and as regular workhorses together... what would you think of that?

Yeah my friend said the same thing about the 3035, that the B-1 is pretty similar to it, so there's no hurry to get that right now.

He also said though that the MC-012's have some quality control issues... how would I go about picking a good pair of MC-012's? Thanks again guys!

Just listen to them in the store and compare them. They probably won't be far off from each other in sound.
