Are we close? ?

Spot on. Sounds like Styx, especially the vox. Very nice tune, excellent production, great background vocals. Where the hell is my windchime? :D

Sounds like you've sorted out your shed for sounds etc.
Very, very nice work.
The build is great & the follow through too.
the solo might use a bit more bite or attack - it doesn't cut through quite as well in the middle as it does at the beginning & end.
I'm waiting for the nex album fellows.
Oh, I'll have to download & play the MP3 as there was a bit of harshness on the edges of the vocal in the 1st few phrases - I assume it's the streamer as it seems like it distorts just a little OR has some sort of metallic edge.
Always excellent work form you blokes.

Listening at work, so I gotta be quick.

No nits for me with the first listen, you still sound like LPC, wich I dig in a wholesome way

Nice.....I'm on headphones right now, but it still sounds great. Cool tune guys....I like it. The layered guitars sound killer. Drums sound good and punchy on these phones. Great bass sound as always. Take that for what it's worth from phones. :D

Great tune though.

Nice opening guitar part. The kick has a lot of impact when it comes in, and sounds great. I like the opening bass line at 1:02 and the way it connects to the sweet gtr line a few bars later. Drumset sounds very natural. Good HF quality on they cymbals. Snare is a little hot on one of the two sets of speakers I listened on. I like the gtrs all the way through... maybe a little too bright for a moment around 2:53.

I like the proportions of the larger structure of the piece.

What do the lyrics mean?

The only thing that stood out at all, and it was minor, was the very first tambourine hit seemed to jump out at me a bit loud.

Cymbals at the end are super crispy - I like that.....

Excellent writing, playing and overall recording.

You've done a great job of keeping the volume balanced whether it was vocals/guitar only or all the instruments.....

:D :) :D :)

On October 1, 1943 Allied forces liberated the city of Naples. I didn't want to get out into the weeds in terms of specifics to that date, time, and place - and so it's sort of a general "everysoldier" song about being afraid.

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to listen and comment.

A healthy dose of 'no nits' and 'spot on' type comments this time. Wow. We MUST be getting better!!!!

Sure was difficult though. It took me two weeks just to get the main guitar part done. When tracking the first instrument with only a metronome, every little flaw is readily apparent. But since it is by itself at the beginning, it had to be pretty problem-free. Another one or two tunes like this, and I'll probably begin to consider myself a legitimate guitar player!!! Maybe.

I'd say you guys are alot closer than close. You harmonies are always signature. I don't know what you guys do. Seems like you take the harmony that should be under the root and sing it up an octave higher or something. Very distinctive.

The drums sound great, man. I'd like to have the bass drum maybe thump me in the chest more, but that's personal. You always have a great, organic drum sound and it seems like you got even more definition from the new micing set up. Carful of the high end on the cymbals. Any crisper and it might sound like they're too hot.

Great, great tune.

Buy Their Frickin' Album!!

Thanks, RAMI.

We wound up using recorderman with mics on the kick and snare, and a V67G out about four feet in front of the kit, fairly heavily compressed with (I believe) a Joemeek twinQ. We then recompressed that with an LA2A plug and mixed that to taste. In addition, we cloned the overhead tracks and compressed them with the LA2A plug, mixing them in slightly.

Adding those compressed tracks in really gave the drums some depth.

I think we will be using recorderman as a standard from here on out.

We're looking into a good room mic and a distressor, as well. Some early favorites are AKG 414 and AT 4050. The Cascade fathead II looks good, but I am afraid conditions in the shed would quickly degrade a ribbon mic.

Pretty much what I do except for the room mic. I never tried that. What kind of mic is usually used for a room mic? Condensor? Ribbon? Dynamic?

I do sometimes clone the overheads and compress them and then just leak them in enough to thicken up the sound, like you did, though I don't do it all the time.

(it could be the compression and re-compression that put the cymbals on the edge of "too hot" for me. Just keep an ear out for that. It's fine on this tune, but something to watch out for)

What is this Recorderman method you wise and adept people speak of?

The song is great, interesting inspiration but that ads to it for me - I love war history. The Chorus is awesome on that, it reminds me of the start of 'More Than A Feeling' and the vocals are pure Jethro Tull to me. So a cool combo!

Ok I had a new listen on my monitors at home.

And I must say its allways great fun to hear your guys stuff, I love the way you guys sound.
You seem to comuicate in a very progressive and tight way With the Bass and Drums.

And the sound is allways spot on, Incanus you`ve got that Prog Bass sound to the fingertips.

And The Vox are this time as allways simply Amazing, Sounds very skilled.
And the Harmonizing would have Made mr. Mercury himself proud.

I cant find anything to put my finger on it just sounds right, and thats what so amazing with you guys everything is ready to print before it shows up on this page.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work guys

The thing I think/thought/I heard is around 42 secs on the MP3. It might just be me or an edge of verb or something.
The MP3 sound fab compared to the quality of the streamer I really am looking forward to hearing more of your stuff & in full CD audio quality at some stage SOOOOOOOOOOOOONNN.
My you mix dark lyrical themes with uplifting melodies SO well I dispare.
Oh, has INcanus listened to the lyrics/vox performance of the revised Gimli's Lament? I'd like a bit of feedback from a member of TLOTR cognicenti - hoping that we've been true to the story & intent -......

Well, we've only really got cardioid condensers so that's what we use. I imagine an omni or figure 8 would be a better choice for room mic than what we've got but the effect is noticeable.

Incanus reminds me that we used the Joemeek on the kick and snare, uncompressed, and that we used an RNP/RNC to compress the room mic and the undersnare mic.

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody - we appreciate it.

Telepaul, check out the "GREAT way to get fat drums, fast, with 3 mics..." thread in the drum forum. It's what inspired us to try this method.
