Cool

Good comments, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree.

Putting it plainly, what you say is maybe "I stop listening".

That may very well be true, to a certain degree, but I 'try' to keep an open ear and an open mind. I am a 'self produced solo artist/homerecordist', after all, and I 'try' to keep my ears and mind open, by definition.

Also, in regard to how music impacts a generation, I agree that 'it's an age-thing', and that the music that impacts a generation 'follows' that generation, or vice-versa, and that every generation has it's defining "art" or "artists".

On the flip side of that, (a little used colloquialism referring to vinyl records), part of the reason that today's music can impact today's younger generation, is that other previously mentioned thing: cultural ignorance.

Music history is a 'long and winding road', as is 'Rock' history, and I think that mediocre or heavily derivative contemporary Rock music has such a big impact on contemporary youth, because they simply don't know their favorite music might be heavily derivative of some older and better Rock music. (IMHO).

FI: anyone who's impressed with 'Marilyn Manson' or 'Mudvayne' were probably not around when 'Alice Cooper' and 'KISS' exploded on the scene, when the 'youth' of 'my generation' got the same thrill, and it all seemed so outrageous. Also, Metallica, as great as they are, in my opinion are still not as good as BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, ROBIN TROWER, JIMMY HENDRIX, or even THE WHO, and the likes of artists like that.

I'm part of a generation, and the same 'Generation Gap'-thing applies to me, and I don't hold myself separate from everyone else. What is 'good' is obviously an entirely subjective judgement, and strictly a matter of opinion.

It's turned into an interesting discussion, and I've thought it through (I think), and the clear and concise rebuttal to my own entire argument is: Most 'kids' (contemporary youth) would say flat out that they think 'my' music is BORING, and they're simply not interested in it, period, and I think I probably feel that same way myself, about 'contemporary' music, even though I 'try' to listen, and 'try' to keep an open mind about it... I'm not impressed. At that point, bottom line, what is 'good' is a matter of opinion, which everyone is entitled to have.

It's not all or nothing, folks, and I know very well there are some really 'happening' artists on the contemporary music scene, but none that are particularly memorable to me, and that just shows my own 'cultural ignorance', I'm sure.

I think there's room in music for practically everyone, as long as they want to listen or play or whatever, including all of us 'very underground' and 'obscure' home recordists.

Hey, Tiny Tim had a HUGE music career as compared to most of us on this BBS, so go figure,... but DON'T get me started on KENNY G!

My 7 year old son,... he does have good taste! ... He's just a chip off the old block,...

Or, should I say, he's "a SPLICE off the old REEL!"

I saw Sea Level by accident in London in 1978. I was on vacation and I was going to see the group UFO and it got cancelled. I ended up at the Sea Level concert at the Hammersmith Odeon (a legendary place). The Dixie Dregs opened for them and I believe it was their first tour. It was pretty eye-opening stuff for just an 18-year old rock fan.

X blows. The singer John Doe and Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam) did an album in support of the West Memphis Three. The WM3 are 3 teenage punks who brutely raped and murdered 3 children in Arkansas. One of the guys even made a full confession even against the advice of his lawyers, and with no possibility of a re-trial. I asked John Doe about that when he was appearing at the local Borders Bookstore and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "I dunno" in his drug-induced stupor. What a total idiot. I'd never buy an X album.

That's cool, man.

Interesting comments too, but 'who blows' is another thread, the "Kenny G" thread.

Coming off and posturing as if you're pro-Murder is definitely not wise, in any industry. Interesting comments, but besides what you said, I don't know anything about the case.

This is not a thread about 'who blows', 'who's pro-murder', or even 'who's good', it's a thread about 'who's obscure', and if the thread had gone on that long, without X being mentioned, then I guess they really ARE obscure.

Who you think blows, who you might think is good, or what albums you might buy may be interesting, but I hardly think John Doe is the first musician to take an unpopular political stance on something.

The way you describe it, it does sound like idiocy, but I'm sure there's more to the story. Save it.

Whatever idiotic benefits X may have played does not change the fact that the music is out there, people like it, and it qualifies for the 'obscure' list.

Cheers.

Maybe I'll name the next band Obscure. Then we will know for sure whos obscure.

ther's a reason why there is so much controversy around that case. i don't know whether they are innocent or not, but there is a lot of doubt. in any case doubt is never good. and to the confession; there's a lot of controversy around that too.

And BTW to quote TOOL (who rock but aren't old or obscure enough to be listed)
if you think that drugs are bad (for making music), do me a favour, when you go home tonight, take all your favourite albums and BURN EM. Cause all that music that has enhanced your life throughout the year was made by musicians who were real f*ckin high on drugs.

it's a free quote i don't know the exact text anymore. it's true though.

guhlenn

ps this does not mean that drugs are healthy don't start flaming me.

Tool's not obscure yet,...

but they will be, someday, just like everything else on this board,...

including all of it's MEMBERS!

By the way,...

the drug legalization thread is two doors down on the left,...

in the Dragon Cave.

i live in holland, drugs are (almost completely) legallized here. no need for me to join the "legalise!" movement hey? ;)
they're even thinking about giving free heroin to addicts... yes that's holland you may all copme and visit me sometimes. not all at once though.

guhlenn
ps sorry that i sidetracked. let's talk about tool. are they famous in the usa? cuz here they are the "candy" of the underground music scene. Man those guys are sooo good. They play at pinkpop which is about 7 miles away from my home (YESYESYESYESYESYES)
;)

guhlenn-

I've smoked my weight in good California sinsemilla, so I guess I don't have much problem with some drugs.

When I was on vacation in Amsterdam once I was staying in a hotel across from a park where the heroin junkies congregated. It was kind of sad to me but that was before legalization or decriminalization. It's really a great city, and I love Holland. I've been there twice.

I know this is off the topic, sorry. I have made the decision not to play with anyone who gets high. It does change the music and I don't like the effect. I know I play much better sober. Then when the disc is done, we may kick back and roll a fat one.

Don't try that at home kids. Stay in school, do your homework, eat your vegetables.

no sweat man... i don't care if you smoke a tree a day :D or none for that matter...

and well kids, eating your vegetables might get you high! you never know LOL

guhlenn

Yes,

A great many weed smokers in the US may wish they were in Holland, or at least that the US would 'loosen up' a little and become more tolerant, like Holland.

I'm sure we'll all visit Holland, someday, so get the couch ready!

TOOL: As with most bands, are:
Today- underground
Tomorrow- mainstream
After that- OBSCURE!

Then again, some bands go from 'underground' DIRECTLY to 'obscure', without ever becoming mainstream! That requires a 'real special' talent!
i.e., NEW YORK DOLLS!

GUHLENN
Where in holland?
I know a family in haarlem...

Ge this is a long long post.

Hey Guys................

Can we get back to listing the bands? :o
I know we have probably already listed the Amboy Dukes.

hmmmm...

Is FOGHAT obscure? I don't think I saw it on the list yet.
