Anyone had any time to demo or does anybody have one of the new Nady Ribbon mics? Wanna share what they're like with us? Tell us what model, how much, what you've used it for and if you liked it or not.

Perhaps not much help, but I've got the Shineybox mic that is the spot on exact thing as the first Nady ribbon and I think it's fantastic. I'm recording my band live in a small room and the ribbon in the middle of the room brings out a very nice fat sound overall. It's also been a champ micing a small bass amp. In fact, any electric source, I don't know why I'd use a different mic at this point.

Therefore, I too am intrigued by the new gaggle of Chinese ribbons suddenly on the market and would expect them to be in the same camp as the first Nady. (Maybe not, but I just bet you - For the money, tremendous value.)

Yep they've got a lot of new ribbons coming out. They got a Royer knockoff and a Coles knockoff. I guess it's about time that home recordings got halfway decent sounding electric guitar tracks. :)

There have been "Stellar" tube mics on ebay lately.

Stellar Royer look-a-like

Undoubtably they are the same as the Nady's. I heard one vague report that they were crap, but I don't think it was first hand.

...actually, that guy has been selling the Chinese OEM ribbon mics on Ebay for months (with good feedback)...the "Stellar" logo is a new addition...these are most likely the same stock mics that Shinybox imports (prior to the upgraded transformer models)...even his hardcases are the same...he's also got a tube mic (very much like the Nady) starting at $100...

Are ribbon mics better than Tube mics ? Thanks.

I mainly use for male vocal.

Has Anyone experienced with these Stellar Mics before ?

Completely different animals. Ribbon mics are reknown for graceful handling of loud high-frequency transients. That said, they aren't bright; in fact the crummier ones are downright dark. They also tend to feature a very pleasing proximity effect. The combination can be good for male vocal, however it isn't going to give you the sparkly shimmery sound so popular on the radio these days. You can save your tube mic for that.

I'm anxious to hear how one of these Royer knockoffs will stand up to an actual 121.

that seller on Ebay has three ribbon mics. One smaller, one large, and a shiny silver thin one with a nice shock mount. Anyone could comment on these ? Thanks.

I'd like to know how that Stellar RSM-1 sounds myself. Can't beat the price at least =P. Wonder how my fiddle would sound with it.

The mics look interesting, however changing the tube in the CM-2 Toob Mic would be a bit of a pain as it looks as if the tube itself is soldered in, rather than having a plug-in base.

I purchased one of the ShinyBox 46L ribbons a while back ...I'm still in awe of the sound of my 4x10 Marshall cab recorded/monitored through it! Additionally, ShinyBox is a one-man operation, so you can actually contact the man who does the work himself if you have *any* questions.

Mr Moon,

Have you found you like it on any other sources? What preamp do you use with it?

Thx

I haven't had too much time to tinker with it (due to my 5-month old son), but I've used it on my 4x10 Marshall cab (DSL100 amp) through a groove tubes brick pre, and it sounded SWEET!!

I did some *quick* a/b testing between my SafeSound Audio P1 and SP VTB-1 on acoustic guitars, and surprisingly, the vtb-1 was better to my ears, at least initially. However, I will be doing more testing once I get some more time after the Christmas season, now that my boy is in daycare and all...

I should note that I originally did the a/b testing to try out a Summit 2ba-221 preamp that I purchased. I returned it because both the P1 and the VTB-1 sounded better with the 46L ribbon mic ...not to mention the *bad* ...er, actually "awful" customer support I received from Summit. Long story short: *Before* I bought the pre, they responded to emails the same day I sent them out, *after* I bought it, I never received a reply to a single email or phone call. Idiots! ...OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but it would appear that they didn't need my money, which isn't too smart really if you think about it, because they're in business to make money, so OK, yeah ...they are idiots.

So anyways, to answer your question directly:

1. For guitar amps (and other loud sources), I use the Brick preamp.

2. On quieter sources (acoustic guitar so far), I use the VTB-1 and/or the P1 as they have more gain than the Brick.

Hope this helps! ;)

Anyone used the RSM-3 yet, or even seen it for sale anywhere? So far I'm only seeing the 1, 2, and 4.

I have been following this topic and other topics, I've read about "STELLAR". I did a search and can't find anything about Stellar mics. Anyone know their E-dress?
